The 2015 Federal Horticultural Show ( BUGA 2015 ) was jointly organized as a Havel region between April 18 and October 11, 2015 in the towns of Brandenburg an der Havel , Rathenow , Premnitz , Stölln and Havelberg and was visited by around 1.05 million guests. This was the first time that a federal horticultural show took place simultaneously in several federal states, in Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt on a total area of 54.7  hectares . The garden show was organized on a decentralized basis. Brandenburg an der Havel in the south and Havelberg in the north are about 55 kilometers as the crow flies or 75 kilometers apart.

Planning and awarding

In 2001, Karlsruhe , which celebrates its 300th anniversary in 2015, was awarded the contract for the 2015 Federal Horticultural Show, but gave it back on March 18, 2003 due to financial and time problems. Osnabrück , which was entrusted with the organization on April 9, 2003 and where the garden show was to take place on the Piesberg , decided in November 2006 for the same reasons not to do so. In a new application process in 2007 Bochum , the Havel region and Karlsruhe were candidates with a new concept. Shortly before the final decision, Bochum withdrew its application in August 2007.

On November 15, 2007, the shareholders' meeting of the German Federal Horticultural Show Society of the Havel region with the cities of Brandenburg an der Havel, Premnitz, Rathenow and Havelberg and the village of Stölln in the municipality of Gollenberg in the Rhinow district gave the final bid. In August 2009, the five participating cities and the Deutsche Bundesgartenschau-Gesellschaft mbH founded a special purpose association to prepare and hold the 2015 Federal Horticultural Show. Around 40 million euros are to be spent on sustainable horticultural investments. The implementation budget comprises around 35.2 million euros, of which around 8 million will be used for horticultural and technical implementation. A little more than a million people visited the Federal Garden Show, 1.5 million were expected. There was a loss of around twelve million euros.

Venues

For the first time in the history of the Federal Horticultural Show, it took place decentralized and transnational in four localities in Brandenburg and one in Saxony-Anhalt. With the renaturation of the Lower Havel as the largest river renaturation project in Europe at the time, coordinated by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU), a river was the backdrop for a federal horticultural show for the first time.

The BUGA 2015 extended over a total of eight parks and two indoor shows in the five venues with a total area of 54.7 hectares.

Brandenburg on the Havel

Marienberg with Friedenswarte

In Brandenburg an der Havel, the Federal Garden Show took place on a total area of 16.5 hectares in two parks and a church hall. The park on the Marienberg had an exhibition area of 12.1 hectares. Various designs with rose plants, modern and historical perennial varieties and a rebuilt vineyard were to be shown on it. The central vantage point in the park was the Friedenswarte . The pre-existing open - air stage was renovated and used.

At the Packhof, on a former shipyard site , a 4.4 hectare park was created. This was located directly on the Havel. 33 so-called theme gardens were to be shown on this garden area. Five stylized (planting) ships were built as a reminiscence of the historic Gebr. Wiemann shipyard and named after the shipyard's historic ships. Two of these ships, the Nordstern and the Luise , were also located as accessible exhibits in the port at the Packhof. The entrance to the Park am Packhof was placed in the renovated and listed shipyard hall. In the former church of St. Johannis on the banks of the Havel opposite the Packhof, 16 changing flower hall shows were planned on a total of 400 square meters of exhibition space.

On April 17, 2015, sculptures of the wood pug were set up around the BUGA sites in the city . These sculptures were created by the artist Clara Walter and are based on a sketch by the Brandenburg humorist Loriot . The so-called forest pug center initially consisted of eight sculptures.

Premnitz

Buga Park in Premnitz

In the small town of Premnitz, two areas totaling 3.3 hectares were created. The so-called green corridor extended over 1.3 hectares from the city center to the banks of the Havel. The day gardens were laid out close to the center. This was followed by the green kitchen, where, for example, plants grown at the Federal Garden Show were cooked, and an information center on renewable raw materials. The area of Bunte Mitte consisted of alternating flower beds. The second area in Premnitz was the 2 hectare promenade. There was a market for gardening supplies. Furthermore, a tour in the so-called alluvial forest and play areas were laid out.

Rathenow

Weinbergbrücke in Rathenow

In Rathenow there were also two parks with a total of 24.2 hectares of areas for the garden show. The Optikpark is located on the Schwedendamminsel in the Havel, has an area of 11.4 hectares and was already a park area for the Brandenburg State Horticultural Show in 2006. The water lily arena was laid out on around 2,500 square meters in the central carp pond. An entertainment program should take place on the Optikpark stage. The 348 meter long Weinbergbrücke pedestrian bridge was built over the Havel from the optics park to the second Rathenow garden show area Weinberg (12.8 hectares) . Show areas such as rhododendron groves, dahlia arenas, rock gardens and steppe gardens were created in the vineyard. In the i-PUNKT green, young plants, balcony and climbing plants were presented and specialist lectures were held by Brandenburg horticulture. The Bismarck Tower , inaugurated in 1914, is a lookout tower on the vineyard.

The aviation park in the village of Stölln had an area of 5.3 hectares. A cactus exhibition , orchard meadow and herbaceous plantations were created there. An Ilyushin Il-62 of the GDR airline Interflug was in the entrance area. The Lilienthal-Centrum Stölln showed a permanent exhibition on Otto Lilienthal . The Fliegerpark and Lilienthal-Centrum were connected via the Flieger- und Landschaftsparkpfad.

Havelberg

House of Rivers - Natura 2000 information center of the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve

The northernmost city hosting the Federal Horticultural Show was Havelberg in Saxony-Anhalt. The 3.9 hectare garden display area was laid out in and around St. Mary's Cathedral on the eastern bank of the Havel. Topics were, for example, grave design and memorials. In the center of the city, which is located on an island in the Havel, is the St. Laurentius Church , in which 16 changing flower shows were held, as in St. Johannis in Brandenburg. In the course of a renaturation, the petroleum island located southwest of the city center and in the Havel was rebuilt. On this there is a viewing platform connected to a pedestrian bridge for the House of Rivers , the information center of the Natura 2000 project of the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve . The center was inaugurated as part of the Federal Garden Show on July 13, 2015 and was part of Havelberg's contribution. Numerous events took place in and around the building, which were attended by around 3,500 participants. This included the “Architecture Day” in June 2015, in which the building itself and its architecture were discussed. During the “River Fishing Week” in August 2015, fishermen from the region presented their craft, with a focus on various environmental education events. The building contains exhibits that often interactively and playfully illustrate the characteristics of the Havel and Elbe river landscapes. A water playground has been created in the outdoor area and various stations illustrate aspects of life in floodplains.

The final press conference of the BUGA-Zweckverband took place in the House of Rivers in October 2015.

particularities

There were flower hall shows in two churches. In the church of St. Johannis Church in Brandenburg an der Havel and St. Laurentius in Havelberg.

The BUGA Skyliner in Brandenburg on the Heineufer; before the ferry dandelion .

In Brandenburg an der Havel, the four ferries Frieda , Pusteblume , Fleißiges Lieschen and Klatschmohn of the Nordstern shipping company were used for shuttle transport on the Havel instead of buses . They ran every few minutes from the central car park on Wiesenweg west of Neustadt, initially upstream to the Packhofufer garden show area. There the ferries turned around and drove back down the river to the Salzhofufer at the St. Johannis Church and then back to the Wiesenweg. The total course with its three stations had a total length of about twice a kilometer.

The river cruise ship Königstein was used for cruises on the Havel between Brandenburg in the south and Havelberg in the north.

A mobile observation tower called the BUGA Skyliner was set up one after the other in the cities of Brandenburg an der Havel, Rathenow and Havelberg. This had a total height of 81 meters. The viewing platform was at 72 meters. The capacity was 60 people or 4.5 tons.

Symbols

The logo of the Federal Garden Show 2015 should represent the visual implementation of the motto "From cathedral to cathedral - the blue ribbon of the Havel". On a white background, the blue ribbon of the river formed the basis for the design. The Havel runs as a defining feature of the landscape and a connecting element between the five locations. A stylized flower with five petals was formed with the blue ribbon, each representing one of the locations. The mascot of the garden show was a catfish named Wilma Wels.

Incidents

On June 13, 2015, there was a thunderstorm around the garden showrooms . A fatal accident occurred at the Rathenow garden show site in Weinberg when a 49-year-old visitor was killed by a falling branch. Because of the incident and the damage caused by the storm, the Rathenow site was closed for several days.

On August 15, 2015, another storm hit the Rathenow Buga site with windpants . The area had been evacuated beforehand. It remained with property and tree damage and a second closure of the site for several days.
