In addition to the garden exhibition , a three-hectare city exhibition with 23 architecturally innovative buildings was presented on around 40 hectares between the Neckar Altarm and the Neckar Canal . After the end of the Federal Horticultural Show , the site is to be developed into the new Heilbronn "Stadtquartier" Neckarbogen with around 3500 residents.

prehistory

The first plans for a federal horticultural show in Heilbronn, where the state horticultural show took place in today's Wertwiesenpark as early as 1985 , go back to the term of office of Mayor Helmut Himmelsbach in 2003, when the green space and urban planning office created an initial concept for the organization of a federal horticultural show in the city on the Neckar . The further planning essentially followed this concept. In 2005, the city acquired the so-called fruit shed area west of the city center, a commercial and industrial area between the Neckar Canal and Altneckar on the backfilled areas of the historic port basins of Heilbronn harbor , including the raft harbor . After further detailed planning, the implementation contract between the city of Heilbronn and the Deutsche Bundesgartenschau-Gesellschaft mbH was signed on December 19, 2007.

The area planned for the Federal Horticultural Show covers an area of around 40 hectares. The plans envisage that not only garden and parking areas will be created, but that the area will also be built on in the future. The residential area there is supposed to be named Neckarbogen , an urban design competition for the Neckarbogen took place in 2008. A master plan for urban development was adopted in 2010, and at the same time an open space planning implementation competition for the design of the green spaces was announced, from which the Berlin office sinai emerged as the winner in 2011 .

In 2012, the previous plans for the Neckarbogen were awarded the pre-certificate in silver from the German Sustainable Building Council. The municipal council of the city of Heilbronn decided on December 17, 2012 that the 2019 Federal Horticultural Show should be held.

On November 3, 2013 (2000 days before the planned opening), the groundbreaking ceremony for the garden exhibition site took place. During the earth movements, the extent of which is estimated at around 400,000 cubic meters, duds from the air raid on Heilbronn as well as remains of the port facilities that were formerly located there came to light . About a quarter of the earth to be moved was classified as polluted. The expansion of the area also includes a change in traffic management with the dismantling of part of the B 39 , which in future will no longer take the Kalistraße adjacent to the area but between Europaplatz and Fügerstraße east of the Altneckar.

The costs for holding the Federal Garden Show are estimated at around 44.5 million euros. The income from an estimated 2.2 million visitors is estimated at 34.5 million euros, which would mean a municipal subsidy of around 10 million euros.

The rough earthworks were largely completed on schedule at the end of 2015, after which gardening and landscaping workers moved in. The infrastructure for the Federal Horticultural Show and the Neckarbogen district should be completed by 2017; according to the plans, the planting of the exhibition areas and flower halls should begin in 2017.

The BUGA 2019 site is located on the island between the Alt-Neckar and Neckar Canal and covers an area of around 40 hectares. This makes the BUGA 2019 one of the rather small federal garden shows. Buses offer a shuttle service from the more remote parking lots to the entrances to the garden show grounds.

The site is divided into five so-called “atmospheres”, each with a different focus on the theme of the garden exhibition. In addition to the river, two new lakes were created, the Karlssee and the so-called raft harbor . At the Karlssee there are regular 35-minute water shows in the evenings during the Federal Garden Show.

For the first time, a city exhibition is taking place on the site of a federal horticultural show. The sub-area Stadt im Werden will later be integrated into Heilbronn as the new Neckarbogen district . There are free drinking fountains on the grounds of the Federal Horticultural Show.

The following are planned as permanent facilities within the federal horticultural show area: the Neckarpark , the Neckaruferpark , the Neckarhabitat , the Seepark with Hafenberg and rocky banks, a leisure lake with a sandy beach and promenade, the city lake with a town square and water feature and model development of the future Neckarbogen district .

Karlssee

Water games in the "day version"

The Karlssee, initially planned under the working title “Leisure Lake”, is the larger of the two lakes that were created in the course of the design of the Gartenschaugeland. Its name was chosen based on the former Carlshafen. Its water surface covers two hectares and it contains about 35,000 cubic meters of water. For the first filling of the lake, Neckar water was used, which was fed into the basin through a 120 meter long pipe from the Altneckar. Since then, however, the surface water from the area has been used for the Karlssee and the raft harbor. The retention soil filter, which is supposed to keep the water of the two underground recreational lakes clean, is integrated into the lakeshore and planted with reeds. A similar system previously only existed in Germany in Halensee in Berlin . The excess rainwater from the "Neckarbogen" area is fed through a pipe system into a so-called combination structure and then enters a 110 m long inlet channel, in which it is directed through stone-filled gabions. Then it is filtered. When it passes through the retention soil filter, some of its phosphorus content is freed from the use of iron hydroxides in the filter sand to prevent excessive algae growth. This goal is also served by the annual mowing of the bank cane, the removal of sediments from specially set up extraction structures, the removal of bird droppings and the regular removal of the floating cover. Below the filter layer, the water then enters a drainage system and is distributed to the two leisure lakes via the combined structure. The combined structure can handle 2,300 liters of inflow per second. If the rainwater sewer network is overwhelmed, the excess rainwater is first diverted via a weir into a relief area and, if necessary, into the Neckar. The combined structure also contains pumping stations and a sand and rubble trap.

The lake is framed by sun terraces, reed areas and a sandy beach and connected with the water stairs. The water games in Karlssee take place every full hour between 12 noon and 5 p.m. On Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and before public holidays, another water show takes place at nightfall, in which the water sprays from 160 fountains up to 40 meters high. This evening show lasts 30 minutes. Seven laser systems and three flame projectors are used.

Water stairs

The water stairs

A pumping station, a sand trap and a scree trap are housed in the so-called combi-structure for the water management of Lake Karlsee, the raft harbor and the water stairs. The pumping station keeps the water stairs in operation during the day. It pumps 80 liters per second. The water flows down the stairs and then over a weir into the return canal, which has a diameter of 70 cm. A refill line from Karlssee is used for replenishment, as around 3.25 m³ of water is lost every day through evaporation on the water stairs. The amount of water that is fed to the stairs in this way is automatically regulated by a float valve. In the evening the pumping station is switched off and the water staircase empties. So that it can be put back into operation in the morning, 55 m³ of water must be available.

program

The Heilbronn Federal Garden Show offers a varied program on a total of eight stages. In addition, there are so-called walking acts that move across the site during their presentation. Some items on the program, such as sports in the park, take place every day with changing activities, but there are also one-off events.

The musical part of the program includes concerts by Reinhold Beckmann with his band, pop singer Stefanie Hertel and Max Mutzke together with the SWR big band .

From April to October, a total of 23 flower shows on various topics take place in the former fruit shed of the Deutsche Bundesbahn. Two flower shows are shown in parallel, which overlap in time. These flower shows each tell a story, which is presented through color-coordinated flower arrangements. For example, in June there was the exhibition “The best things in life”, which addressed the various stages in life - childhood, school, youth, family, etc. Also in June the exhibition on the "Japanese Art Forms" took place with many different kinds of bonsai trees, exotic plants and orchids.

Shortly before the end of the Federal Horticultural Show, an Oktoberfest took place on the site.

Shuttle services and vehicles integrated into the exhibition

The Willy Schneider in the shuttle service

Buses offered a shuttle service from the more remote parking lots to the entrances of the garden show grounds. Within the exhibition, the Willy Schneider passenger ship operated as a visitor shuttle on the Altneckar. The ship Experimenta with a knowledge program tailored to the garden show, the former Haßmersheim ferry , which was used as a stage, and the tug Port Authority Heilbronn were also integrated into the garden show .

mascot

Mascot Karl

The exhibition's mascot, a pink garden gnome named Karl, was unveiled on June 21, 2018. The figure is designed futuristically. Named after the former Karlshafen in Heilbronn, the dwarf stands for the connection between tradition and modernity at the Federal Garden Show. Karl was designed from carbon and wrapped with fiberglass . He has a hat on and is holding a tulip in his hand. The Federal Garden Show provides templates for 3D printers. So Karl can be created in a small format.

Karl is also part of the souvenirs for the Federal Garden Show. It was produced, among other things, from the recently marketed, color-coordinated type of chocolate Ruby.

Shortly after the unveiling, there was criticism of the design of the garden gnome. Then there were criminal offenses related to Karl for months. Copies of the figure placed in several places around Heilbronn for advertising purposes were partially stolen, damaged and blown up.
