An area of around 70 hectares southwest of downtown Düsseldorf served as the exhibition area, which has since been referred to as the Südpark . The existing Volksgarten , a south-east adjoining area with allotment gardens and an area to the south of it, “Before the dike”, with a former quarry pond were included.

The site thus extended between the Cologne – Duisburg railway line in the north, the Philipshalle in the east and the federal motorway 46 in the south . Further south is the university's botanical garden . The Brückerbach that flows past there leads in its further course to the Rhine and creates a green connection between the Rhine and the city center.

preparation

Since 1975, discussions have been held in Düsseldorf about whether the city should host a federal horticultural show. In 1977 the city council voted in favor. In 1978 the Central Horticultural Association of the City of Düsseldorf awarded the contract for the Federal Garden Show 1987. The city's most important goal was to create permanent green spaces for leisure and recreation in the densely populated districts of Wersten and Oberbilk .

The Volksgarten was expanded by 6 hectares of rededicated, former street area. To the north-west of the quarry pond, three more, smaller lakes of 1.6 hectares were created and a wet biotope was created. While the water level of the quarry pond fluctuates according to the water level of the Rhine, the new lakes were sealed against it in order to avoid these groundwater fluctuations, which are incompatible with many riparian plants. Another water landscape was created by damming the course of the Düssel to several ponds over a distance of 400 m . To this end, 30,000 m³ of earth were moved.

1500 large trees were planted.

The allotment garden was rearranged. Of the original 956 allotments, 400 have been preserved and 200 newly created. In addition, 250 replacement systems were created elsewhere.

exhibition

The main theme of the exhibition was: "The garden for us all".

Gardens

16 themed gardens were lined up along an "axis of the hedge gardens" in which plants were grouped according to areas of life.

The Philipshalle and other halls - temporarily built for the exhibition - presented changing exhibitions.

In the entire city, the greenery was particularly intensively cared for during the Federal Horticultural Show, street space was planted, plaza designs improved and more flowers were put out. In addition, there were special plantings in other parks. That happened in the Hofgarten , the Rheinpark, the garden of Schloss Benrath and the Nordpark .

Attractions

One of the visitor attractions in the park was an exhibition runway. It was originally supposed to remain in Düsseldorf after the end of the exhibition in October 1987 , similar to other BuGa locations in Cologne , Dortmund or Stuttgart , but was ultimately given up.

The visitor attractions also included an observation tower ( gyro tower ), on which the visitors could be raised to get an overview of the exhibition area from above. The observation tower also disappeared.

A play area with a water playground was created “in front of the dike” .

At the entrance to the BuGa am Volksgarten, the art installation "Zeitfeld" was set up on the occasion of the Federal Garden Show, which consists of 24 high, round clocks.

traffic

Street

The BuGa relied entirely on the use of public transport by visitors. The outlying company Henkel in Reisholz provided large areas for parking 6,000 cars for visitors. The visitors were taken from there by the Düsseldorf Rheinbahn to the BuGa premises by shuttle bus. In addition, a large parking lot was created in the Wersten / University area, with a separate BuGa bus station on the edge

rail

Visitors from surrounding cities could reach the BuGa via the Düsseldorf Volksgarten stop and the Düsseldorf-Oberbilk stop by S-Bahn. The 717 tram ran from Düsseldorf main train station to the exhibition grounds at frequent intervals. Furthermore, the BuGa could be reached near the Philipshalle with line 710 to Eller . It was also possible to reach the entrance to the BuGa am Volksgarten by tram line 706. From the direction of Bilk, Wersten and Friedrichstadt the lines 701 and 703 drove to today's stop "Südpark" (then: "BUGA '87"). A new BuGa / Südpark stop was built for tram line 701 to Benrath .

aftermath

The park area of the BuGa 1987 has largely been preserved as it was prepared for the Federal Horticultural Show and is now available to visitors as a south park .
