The 1985 Federal Horticultural Show took place in Berlin from April 26th to October 20th . It was the first federal horticultural show in Berlin.

prehistory

The starting point for the 1985 Federal Horticultural Show was a report by Hermann Mattern , who in 1970 established a green space deficit in the West Berlin districts of Neukölln , Tempelhof and Kreuzberg .

A largely treeless arable and fallow area between Buckow , Britz and Mariendorf of around 90 hectares was ideal for conversion into a green area. The Berlin House of Representatives changed the zoning plan accordingly in 1975 . The Britzer Garten was the first large green area that could be built in the west of the then divided city for almost 25 years. This was all the more important as the West Berliners were cut off from the city's surroundings at the time.

preparation

In 1977 an ideas competition followed , the second winner of which, Wolfgang Miller , Stuttgart , was commissioned to build the Federal Horticultural Show in 1985 . An artificial landscape was created on the site between 1978 and 1985, with lakes, hills up to 18 m high, bodies of water, biotopes , forests, gardens and large play areas. A landscape park was created with near-natural zones for leisure and relaxation. Most of the lawns could be entered.

The focal point of the 90 hectare area was the 10 hectare, up to 5 m deep lake for which 1 million m 3 of soil was excavated. It was given natural areas, as well as a beach for children and a model boat harbor. Different themed gardens have been set up and a small animal zoo. Special attractions were

In the 178 days in which the Federal Garden Show was open to the public in 1985 , it received 4 million or 5.2 million visitors.

aftermath

With the Britzer Garten , Berlin has remained one of the most attractive inner-city green and recreational areas in Berlin from the 1985 Federal Horticultural Show . The works of art brought there for the Federal Horticultural Show in 1985 remained on site and the facilities built for them were largely preserved. The park remained fenced and admission is still charged.

The facility is now being looked after by Grün Berlin Park und Garten GmbH .
