The 1963 International Horticultural Exhibition (IGA) was also a Federal Horticultural Show . It took place in Hamburg from April 26th to October 13th, 1963 .

prehistory

The International Horticultural Exhibition 1963 took place in succession to the International Horticultural Exhibition Hamburg 1953 . In addition to the Planten un Blomen site used in 1953, a section of the Hamburg ramparts and the Heiligengeistfeld should also be included this time - an area of 76 hectares . The problem was that this inner-city area was crossed by several streets. Solving this traffic problem turned out to be very expensive. The tender for the planning took place in 1958.

Further problems arose from the storm surge disaster of 1962. At first, eliminating the damage it caused had absolute priority. The winter of 1962/63 was also very cold, which caused problems for some of the plants.

The horticultural exhibition

Günther Schulze and Heinrich Raderschall were the winners of the 1958 tender . Karl Plomin was brought into the team because of his experience with the IGA in 1953. The transition between Planten un Blomen and the ramparts was made with a wooden platform, which was removed again after the exhibition. The three streets crossing the ramparts each received a 22 m wide pedestrian underpass . For this, the Sievekingplatz had to be lowered in the lower area and completely redesigned.

In the area of Planten un Blomen and the botanical garden , which had already been landscaped from the previous events , the focus was on plants, while in the area of the ramparts, on the other hand, on landscaping. 36 themed gardens were created here based on designs by foreign and German architects . A music pavilion was added and the Rosenhof restaurant .

The botanical garden received new show greenhouses designed by Bernhard Hermkes , which showed different climatic zones . The Mediterranean terraces were built on the slope in front of the greenhouses .

A gondola lift led from Dammtor over eleven pillars and 1.415 kilometers to Millerntor . It opened up the elongated exhibition area, but was dismantled again after the end of the exhibition.

The costs for the horticultural exhibition amounted to 55 million DM , of which 18 million DM went to the traffic structures. The exhibition had 5.4 million visitors.

Rating

The IGA 1963 was criticized at the time - mainly because of the high costs. The number of visitors, which was lower than that of the 1961 Federal Garden Show in Stuttgart two years earlier, but was quite high at 5.4 million, was also criticized. And after the Federal Horticultural Show, the Hamburg residents were very reluctant to accept the largely cleared area of the ramparts. From a long-term perspective, however, the investment in the IGA in 1963 was a success: Today the site is one of the most intensively used green spaces in Hamburg.
