The Federal Garden Show 2025 is to take place in Rostock . The BUGA will take place in the center of Rostock in the city harbor and on the opposite bank of the Warnow .

canditature

The provincial capital Schwerin and Wuppertal originally also applied to host the BUGA 2025 . The Schwerin application failed due to a lack of financial commitments from the state government. The Wuppertal city council decided in July 2018 to withdraw the application for 2025 and aim for a different year. Rostock's official application was submitted by Mayor Roland Methling at the end of July 2018, and the city was awarded the contract at the end of August 2018.

concept

With the BUGA, the so-called "Rostocker Oval" around the Unterwarnow at the city harbor in the city center , in Dierkow and in Gehlsdorf is to be developed in terms of urban development. A Berlin planning office had worked out a concept for the application and questioned Rostock citizens several times.

The BUGA is intended to trigger massive investments in Rostock; it is to be linked to the implementation of other large-scale projects. Part of the plans are new buildings for the Volkstheater , which has been wrestled for years, and for the State Archaeological Museum , both of which are to be located in the city harbor. However, the schedule for these construction projects is extremely tight, an architectural competition can take place in 2019 at the earliest. A Warnow bridge for pedestrians and cyclists is to connect the city harbor and the Gehlsdorfer Ufer north of the Warnow. The main traffic artery Am Strande , the busiest road in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which previously separated the city harbor from the northern old town , is to be lowered and capped. A former landfill is to be developed in Dierkow, and a new city park is to be built in the east of Rostock. The construction of a market hall is also planned .

The city harbor is mainly used as a parking lot and for public festivals. On the right is the street Am Strande, which is to be lowered and capped, in the background the Dierkower Ufer.

Costs and financing

The costs for the garden show are said to amount to more than one hundred million euros, of which the costs for the Buga itself would make up a smaller part. The greater part is attributable to urban infrastructure projects, some of which are already planned - such as the new building of the Volkstheater or the pedestrian bridge - or would hardly be financially feasible without the BUGA, such as the lowering and capping of the street Am Strande or the construction of the State Archaeological Museum.

Around half of the funds required are to come from the federal government as funding. The state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has also basically promised its financial support.

Experience with the 2003 International Horticultural Exhibition

Rostock had already hosted the 2003 International Horticultural Exhibition. The site chosen was fallow land in Schmarl . This gave the planners the chance to upgrade the northwestern prefabricated building district .

The construction and design of the IGA site took six years and cost 62 million euros, plus 32 million euros for the construction of the exhibition center. Financing was provided by the Hanseatic City of Rostock and the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as well as the federal government. The event attracted 2.6 million visitors. The IGA's deficit was finally 20 million euros.

The subsequent use of the site was criticized: the peripheral location and poor transport connections turned out to be problematic, until 2019 visiting the IGA Park was only possible for an entrance fee and the exhibition hall does not have any cost-covering continued use.
