From 1978 he worked in various areas of responsibility in the Rostock overseas port. In 1990 he moved to the administration of the Hanseatic city and became a full-time organizer of the international sailing ship meeting Hanse Sail . In 1995 he organized the 777th anniversary of Rostock and in 1999 the celebrations for the turn of the millennium.

Methling is married and has three children.

politics

Methling was a member of the SED until 1989 .

On February 27, 2005, Methling was elected with 58.2% of the votes in the first ballot in the election of the mayor. The swearing-in as Lord Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Rostock took place on April 6, 2005. He replaced the SPD politician Arno Pöker in office, who had resigned. The reason for Pöker's resignation were allegations after the International Horticultural Exhibition IGA in Rostock, which was organized under Pöker in 2003, despite the good number of visitors, in addition to 44 million euros of planned expenditure, an additional 18 million euros deficit at the expense of the city and also the re-use concept of the IGA site at the Warnow did not open. This is one of the reasons why the city of Rostock faced insolvency when Methling took office. The 2005 financial year provided for new debt of a further 50 million euros. In Methling's first five years in office, this structural deficit in the city's budget slowly decreased. In the financial year 2010 the city of Rostock has a balanced budget. In order to pay off the debts of currently around 200 million euros, which mostly accumulated during the term of office of Methling's predecessors, the sale of municipal property is under discussion, but is controversial in the Rostock citizenship, the city parliament.

In 2008 Methling hit the headlines when he resigned the director of the Rostock Volkstheater Steffen Piontek without notice. Piontek is said to have arbitrarily extended contracts with senior employees during the cancellation talks, including that of his wife who was employed at the theater. Methling's decision was confirmed on August 26, 2008 by the main committee of the citizenship.

On February 5, 2012, Methling was again elected Lord Mayor of Rostock in the first ballot with 53.8% and a voter turnout of 37%.

Methling was unable to run again for the 2019 mayor election due to an age limit. He ran for the Rostock citizenship, was also elected, but did not take up his mandate.
