Life and work

Pöker grew up in Veenhusen together with two brothers and two sisters. After graduating from high school in 1977 in Leer, he began studying at the Ostfriesland University of Applied Sciences , which he completed in 1981 with a diploma as an industrial engineer for maritime transport. He also went to sea in various positions from 1975 to 1982, acquired the captain's license and from 1982 to 1984 worked as a union secretary at the ÖTV in Hamburg and Bremen . From 1992 to 1994 Pöker was the office manager of Rostock's Lord Mayor Klaus Kilimann and was also the head of the main office of the Hanseatic city. In 1994/95 he was a research assistant at the Progress Institute for Economic Research in Bremen. From 1995 to 2004, Pöker was Lord Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Rostock.

In addition to Horst Rahe, Pöker was one of the managing directors of the Deutsche Seereederei Rostock (DSR) and was one of the managing directors in the DSR-Hotel-Holding. In 2019 he was managing director of the real estate division of the Friedemann Kunz Family Foundation , owner of scanhaus .

Political party

Pöker joined the SPD and was a member of the party's federal executive committee from 2003 to 2005.

Public offices

On May 5, 1995, Pöker was elected Lord Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Rostock and held this office until his resignation on October 31, 2004. The reason for the resignation was the widespread criticism of his leadership style and of the financing of the International Horticultural Exhibition 2003 , which produced a 20 million deficit. Other controversial, costly projects such as the privately financed Warnow Tunnel , for which the city took over extensive guarantees, were connected with Pöker . Since April 6, 2005, his successor has been the non-party politician Roland Methling .

Since June 2007 Pöker has been Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Denmark for the consular district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
