Horst Rahe

Horst Rahe (born July 13, 1939 in Hanover ) is a German entrepreneur and hotelier.

Training, real estate business

Rahe studied business administration in Cologne. After graduating, he started working for the real estate and finance company Dr. Rüger Immobilien Holding , where he was promoted to the board within a year .

In the mid-1970s he left Dr. Rüger. He bought real estate, renovated it and sold it again. At the end of the 1970s, he also founded a company in Texas that was drilling for oil and gas, but left the industry again around 1982.

In 1992 Rahe bought the Hamburg Hotel Louis C. Jacob . In 1994 the Swiss Hotel Paradies in Ftan was added.

In 1993 he and his then partner Nikolaus H. Schües acquired the highly deficient former GDR combine Deutsche Seereederei in Rostock and merged it with the " F. Laeisz Schiffahrtsgesellschaft" to form the F. Laeisz shipping company . They had undertaken to keep 2,200 of the 3,000 jobs and to invest around three billion marks (around 1.5 billion euros). The company decided to expand the cruise business with a new building, which was put into service in June 1996 under the name AIDA - “The Club Ship” (now AIDAcara ). This was the beginning of the AIDA Cruises club ships.

At the end of 1998 the profit zone was reached again. Shortly thereafter, Rahe and Schües separated, who kept the cargo shipping division. The shipping company was sold to the British shipping company P&O in 1999 and is now part of Carnival Cruises .

In 2002, the Deutsche Seereederei and the British shipping company P&O formed the company Seetours , which offered sea cruises with the A'Rosa Blu and river cruises on the Danube under the brand name “A'Rosa” . In 2004 a turnover of over 400 million euros was achieved. In 2009 the A-Rosa Flussschiff -Reederei from the Deutsche Seereederei was sold as part of a management buyout .

A-Rosa-Resort Hotels and A-ja-Resort Hotels

In 2013, Rahes A-Rosa -Resort Hotels included four upscale hotels on Sylt , in Travemünde , Kitzbühel and on the Scharmützelsee . In March 2013 the inexpensive wellness hotel A-ja-Resort was opened in Warnemünde , in March 2015 A-ja Grömitz was added.

The eight hotels managed by DSR Hotel Holding GmbH had a turnover of 105 million euros in 2013 with an EBITDA of 20.9 million euros and an average occupancy rate of 71%. In June 2014, Rahe announced that he would be retiring to his holding and supervisory board positions at the end of 2014 at the age of 74.

Other activities

In 1999 Rahe founded the Horst Rahe Foundation , which supports highly talented students at the Rostock University of Music and Theater . Well-known scholarship holders were, for example, Caspar Frantz and Liv Migdal .

He is co-founder of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Music Festival and belongs to the Elbphilharmonie sponsorship group . Rahe was Honorary Consul of the Republic of Finland from 1996 .

Private life

Rahe has been married since 1964 and has one daughter. With a fortune of 250 million euros, he is one of the 600 richest Germans. Rahe lives in Switzerland .
