The Rostock University of Music and Drama (HMT) was founded in 1994 and has been based in the former Katharinenkloster in the Hanseatic city of Rostock since 2001 . It is an internationally sought-after training center in the fields of music, drama, music teaching, theater teaching (performing) and musicology. The approximately 500 students come from 42 nations.

history

In 1947 a university for music, theater and dance was founded in Rostock. The composer Rudolf Wagner-Régeny was in charge . This university later became a branch of the Berlin university "Hanns Eisler" . In 1968 the "State Drama School Rostock" was founded, which in the 1980s was affiliated to the "Ernst Busch" Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin . At the turn of the year 1990/1991 it was spun off again and continued as the "Academy for Dramatic Art" by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . From these traditions, the present independent artistic college was created on January 12, 1994, which combined music and drama training. The founding rector was Wilfrid Jochims, who previously worked at the Cologne University of Music .

The accommodation was initially difficult. Housed in a former special school on Bussebart and on Ulmenstrasse, the space available for the growing number of students was very limited. In April 2001, new rooms were available in the former Katharinenkloster, reconstructed and converted by Jons Reimann, in the eastern old town of Rostock.

The university is the venue for a variety of concerts. Over 300 performances take place each year with the participation of teachers and students.

The actor, painter and writer Armin Mueller-Stahl has been a member of the University Council of HMT Rostock since July 2009 .
