history

Robert Schmidt, founder of the Wismar Engineering Academy

Seal of the Wismar Engineering Academy

The university was founded as the Wismar Engineering Academy on May 9, 1908 with a contract between the seaside town of Wismar and the first director, the architect Robert Schmidt , who was in charge until his retirement in 1923. This makes it the oldest training facility for engineers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

The seat and school building of the initially private educational establishment was the now vacant courtyard house of the Holy Spirit Church . Classes began in September 1908 with the enrollment of 13 students, taught by Robert Schmidt and two other lecturers. The facility initially consisted of the mechanical engineering and civil engineering departments, followed by architecture, electrical engineering and mechanical and electrical engineering. Around half of the students at that time came to Wismar from Eastern and Northern Europe.

In 1922, the engineering academy became the property of the city of Wismar as the municipal polytechnic . In 1937 civil engineering was outsourced and the range of courses was expanded to include aircraft construction .

Between 1941 and 1945 there was a flight engineering working group with FAG Wismar at what was then the engineering school of the Seestadt Wismar .

The maritime sector in Warnemünde has a long tradition. It emerged from the Grand Ducal Navigation School founded in Wustrow (Fischland) in 1846 . Part of the training in Wustrow was taken over in 1954 by the Warnemünde School of Engineering for Shipbuilding Technology , and when the Warnemünde / Wustrow School of Engineering was founded in 1969, both institutions were merged. In 1989 the name was changed to the Warnemünde-Wustrow University of Seafaring . After the dissolution of the Maritime University in 1990, the legal takeover by the University of Rostock took place . The Wustrow university section was closed in 1992 at the end of the summer semester. In the same year, the maritime department became a new department at the University of Wismar .

The technical school for applied arts in Heiligendamm , which was founded in 1949 in Wismar as a work school for quality and form and officially opened on October 23, 1950, was also affiliated to the Wismar University of Applied Sciences in 1992 with the status of a department (design / interior architecture). The move from Wismar to Heiligendamm took place in 1953. In the summer of 2000 the department moved into a new building on the Wismar campus.
