education

Gerhard Banse was born as the son of the gardener Erwin Banse and his wife, the saleswoman Elsbeth Banse. In Berlin he attended elementary school and high school, which he graduated from high school in 1965 . From 1965 to 1969 he studied chemistry , biology and pedagogy at the Potsdam University of Education, graduating as a graduate teacher for Marxism-Leninism . He then worked as a teacher at the Polytechnic Oberschule (POS) in Gutengermendorf until 1971.

From 1971 to 1974 he was a planned aspirant at the Humboldt University in Berlin , Chair of Philosophical Problems in Natural Sciences ( Hermann Ley ). In 1974 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. with the topic "On the philosophical analysis of the development of the scientific understanding of technology".

He has been married to the psychologist and qualified pedagogue Bärbel Banse since 1971 . The couple has a daughter who studied law and a son who studied regional and environmental planning.

Scientist for philosophy of technology

After receiving his doctorate in 1974, Banse worked for ten years as a research assistant at the Central Institute for Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW) in Berlin, Philosophical Issues in Scientific Development , whose head was Herbert Hörz at the time. Since the academy was purely a research institution and Banse wanted to maintain his connection to practice, he taught at the same time at the Wismar Engineering University and the Potsdam University of Education . During this time he received his doctorate B to Dr. sc. phil. (equivalent to habilitation ) on the subject of technology - technical sciences - philosophy (problems, results and points of view on philosophical questions of technology and technical sciences from the perspective of dialectical and historical materialism) . From 1984 to 1986 he then worked as a working group leader at this central institute of the AdW.

From 1986 to 1990 he was Vice President of the GDR mass organization Society for the Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge (URANIA). During this time in 1988 he was appointed professor of philosophy at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. In 1990 and 1991 he initially took on the role of federal manager of URANIA - Society for the Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge. V.

As a visiting professor at home and abroad

After German reunification , he worked as a research assistant in 1992 and 1993 as part of the researcher integration program . From 1994 he got a position as a research assistant at the Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus (BTU), Faculty 1, Institute for Philosophy and History of Technology. Here he had taken over the chair of general engineering.

From 1997 he was a visiting scientist at the European Academy for Research into the Consequences of Scientific and Technical Developments in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler .

In the 1990s he had several guest research stays at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf (with Alois Huning), the Pennsylvania State University (with Carl Mitcham ) and the then nuclear research center in Karlsruhe (with Herbert Paschen and Gotthard Bechmann). From the beginning of 1999 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Philosophy at the University of Potsdam within the framework of the University Special Program III, program item “Innovative Research New Countries” .

From October 1999 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis at the Karlsruhe Research Center. His main research areas were:

  • Knowledge society and knowledge politics
  • Innovation processes and technology consequences.

In particular, he also dealt with cooperation with institutions in Central and Eastern Europe as well as with technical change and cultural diversity. From May 2004 to February 2007 he was delegated to the Fraunhofer Application Center for Logistics System Planning and Information Systems (FhG-ALI) in Cottbus. In 2002 he was the initiator and until 2011 head of the International Network on Cultural Diversity and New Media (CULTMEDIA).

In 2000 he was appointed visiting professor at the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica ( Slovak Republic ), Chair of Ethics and Aesthetics. At the same time he was appointed honorary professor for general technical science at the BTU Cottbus. In addition, he became Vice President of the Leibniz Society in 2009.

In 2011 he reached legal retirement and was adopted from the KIT with an honorary colloquium. At the beginning of 2012 he became President of the Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin . He is also a lecturer at the University of Potsdam, the Silesian University in Katowice (Poland), the Technical University (Polytechnic) Rzeszów (Poland) and the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica . From March 2015 to December 2018 he was visiting scholar at the EA European Academy of Technology and Innovation Assessment .
