Frank Fuchs-Kittowski

Frank Fuchs-Kittowski (born November 28, 1970 in Berlin ) is a German computer scientist and professor of computer science , specializing in IT systems to support mobile, knowledge-intensive and collaborative work.

Career

Frank Fuchs-Kittowski is the younger son of the computer scientist and science philosopher Klaus Fuchs-Kittowski and his wife at the time Marlene Fuchs-Kittowski , clinical psychologist and habilitation philosopher. His brother Gerhard Fuchs-Kittowski , who is seven years his senior , also lives in Berlin and is an economic historian who deals with the restitution of Jewish property.

Frank Fuchs-Kittowski comes from a group of scholars steeped in tradition, including his parents, his great-grandfather Emil Fuchs and his descendants as well as Wilhelm Franz Francke , Paul Wagner and Georg Klaus .

From 1977 to 1987 Frank Fuchs-Kittowski attended the 17th “Wilhelm Florin” polytechnic high school in Berlin-Mitte and graduated from the 10th grade of the general polytechnic high school (POS). After that he was a pupil of the extended high school " Max Planck " in Berlin-Mitte until 1989 and graduated with the Abitur . As part of compulsory military service, he then completed basic military service with the National People's Army (NVA) of the GDR until its dissolution with German reunification in 1990.

His computer science studies at the Technical University of Berlin (TUB) lasted from 1990 to 1997. In 1993 and 1994 he took part in the ERASMUS exchange program at the University of Manchester and devoted himself to computational linguistics. Here he also worked as a German teacher at the Department of Language and Linguistics. In 1994 he received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . From 1994 to 1996 he worked as a student assistant at the Konrad-Zuse-Center for Information Technology (ZIB) with the development of algorithms in the programming language C ++ for the parallel computer Cray-T3D. In 1996 he held a diploma position at the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Technology (ISST) in Berlin. He obtained his degree in computer science at the TUB with the thesis "Synchronous tele-cooperation systems in operational application" (grade: very good).

Employment as a computer scientist

Frank Fuchs-Kittowski started his career in the spring of 1997 as a research assistant at the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Technology (ISST), from 1999 in the role of project manager and group leader. His academic work focuses on information logistics, business process-oriented information and knowledge management and cooperative knowledge work. Here he gained demanding, theoretical specialist knowledge and related practical experience. In particular, he has acquired, carried out and managed numerous industrial and research projects in various subject areas. For example, he has worked on a number of industrial projects at Fraunhofer-ISST with the development of preliminary studies (Dussmann AG), feasibility studies (TU Berlin), market studies (Soest district), concept proposals (Wella AG), decision templates (IG Metall), among others Management decisions and subsequent projects for the conception, development, introduction and application of company information systems are prepared. On the other hand, he has implemented complex information systems in research and development projects together with partners from industry (e.g. APO-Pilot, WiKo, SemAT).

His doctorate in engineering (Dr.-Ing.) Took place in December 2006 at the Department of Computer Science at the TU Berlin with the dissertation “Integrated IT support for knowledge work - an activity and cooperation-oriented perspective”; Reviewers were Professors H. Weber , H. Krcmar and B. Lutterbeck . The ideas and concepts presented in this dissertation and tested in practice were effectively implemented for the design of operational knowledge management and used for interdisciplinary teaching and research in this area.

His functions at Fraunhofer-ISST included, in particular, the conception and acquisition of research and development projects with third-party funding on a national and international level, as well as the support and guidance of academic staff, students and interns. In addition, he took on courses at the TU Berlin on the subjects of "Electronic Markets and Electronic Commerce", "Web-Based Learning", "Technical Information Systems (Modeling)" and special lectures at the FHTW Berlin on "Artificial Intelligence Processes" and " Knowledge management and cooperation systems ".

Frank Fuchs-Kittowski has been in a relationship with the dentist Lydia Schulze (* 1973) since 1992 , and the couple has two daughters Antonia (* 2001) and Elisabeth (* 2007).

Professor of Environmental Informatics

In 2009, Frank Fuchs-Kittowski was appointed professor of computer science at the Berlin University of Technology and Economics (HTW Berlin) in the bachelor's and master's degree in corporate environmental informatics. This professorship corresponds to a large extent to the knowledge he has acquired over many years and his special wealth of experience, especially in the field of environmental and disaster control. Fuchs-Kittowski has significantly expanded the training of students with bachelor's and master's degrees in the specialization for (corporate) environmental informatics, which is rare in German-speaking countries, through his courses.

Fuchs-Kittowski has thus contributed to the development and profiling of the corporate environmental informatics course as well as to pioneering work in this very young field of applied informatics, and has supported this with special publications, in particular several specialist books. As an expert in corporate environmental informatics, he does not regard this subject, in which Germany, with its companies and research potential, plays a leading role worldwide, as technologically complete. Therefore, he continues to work on the scientific preliminary for future solutions in close contact with industry and research partners. He is also the deputy spokesman for the research focus "Software systems and IT methods for sustainable development" at HTW Berlin.

The scientific focus of his research group at HTW Berlin is on the one hand methods and systems to support cooperation and collaboration (especially social software, Enterprise 2.0, cooperative knowledge work, crowdsourcing, crowd tasking and citizen science) and on the other hand methods and concepts for mobile geodata-based information infrastructures and applications (with Mobile Sensing and Mobile Augmented Reality), whereby the area of application is often (operational) environmental and disaster control, especially flood protection.

At the same time, Frank Fuchs-Kittowski is head of the "Environmental Information Systems" division at the "Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems FOKUS" in the "ESPRI" competence center and works on solutions for early risk detection and public warnings in the public and private sectors as well as the involvement of the population in the environmental and civil protection.

Fuchs-Kittowski has given numerous lectures on the research results of his team at conferences and scientific events, some of which he initiated and helped to organize himself. His scientific publications also reflect his teamwork and include over 100 papers, including numerous proceedings and book chapters as well as several books.
