The Fraunhofer Institute for Software and System Technology ISST (Fraunhofer ISST) is an institution of the Fraunhofer Society . It was founded in 1992 and is based in Dortmund . Boris Otto has been the managing director of the institute since January 1, 2017 . Together with Jakob Rehof, Boris Otto forms the institute's management.

The Fraunhofer ISST works in the business areas "Logistics", "Healthcare" and "Data Management" on the conception and development of IT solutions. The Fraunhofer ISST has recently started working in the "Automotive Industries" business area.

Results from basic research are implemented in industrial projects - from the idea to the realization - at the same time the experience gained at the institute is incorporated into teaching and research. The institute works directly on behalf of industry, but also on publicly funded projects for the EU, federal and state governments.

History and present

The institute was founded in 1992 in Berlin, with a branch in Dortmund, both under the direction of Herbert Weber , whereby researchers from the former relevant institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR were to be given a new perspective.

On July 1, 2012, the institute parts of the ISST in Berlin and Dortmund were separated from each other and the Berlin part of the ISST and the Fraunhofer institutes FIRST and FOKUS in Berlin were merged.

Boris Otto has been the managing director of the institute since January 1, 2017. Together with Jakob Rehof he forms the institute management.

Research and Development

The research focus is on the development of technologies, processes and systems for data-centric business solutions. The overarching model of the Fraunhofer ISST is " Digitization made in Germany": Digitization as the central social, business and technological development of today offers companies new opportunities to optimize their business opportunities by understanding data as a strategic resource. The Fraunhofer ISST particularly supports companies with classic physical products on their way to a hybrid offer with physical and digital components.

In collaboration with the University of St. Gallen, the Fraunhofer ISST Digital Business Engineering method developed, the companies in the digital transformation of their processes and the expansion of in-house ICT support competencies. The research institute is aimed at project and line managers from marketing, sales, business development, supply chain management and IT. Digital Business Engineering is a model-driven and method-based transformation approach for the digital age. Companies benefit from this method because it offers leadership and structure in a relatively unexplored field of activity and because practical experience in application is continuously incorporated into the method's further development. With digital business engineering, the Fraunhofer ISST provides strategic support for the reorientation with regard to digitization, the adaptation of processes and, of course, the technical implementation at system level.

Business areas

The institute is mainly active in the following business areas.

Healthcare

Promotion of digital business engineering for the new digital healthcare system. The Fraunhofer ISST supports cost units, service providers and companies in the healthcare industry in their digitization strategies, designs and develops digital products and services and helps with the transformation of existing analog to digitally supported processes.

logistics

The institute supports logistics companies with logistics IT. Logistics for the future trends such as the Internet of Things, Cloud Computing and Industry 4.0 are tracked.

Data economy

Research into the software technology foundation for data-intensive value chains. The focus of the developments are processes and technologies for the management of data goods. This department also implements the necessary infrastructures for cross-company data exchange. In the Industrial Data Space research project , Fraunhofer ISST is in charge of the development of the central software components.

Partners and customers

The institute supports customers from the first idea to the development of a new IT solution. The offer ranges from training courses, studies and evaluations to consulting and the conception and development of IT solutions. In addition to classic users of critical IT systems, the institute's partners and clients include primarily companies from the healthcare and logistics sectors.

The Fraunhofer ISST and the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML have joined forces at the Dortmund location to form the "Fraunhofer Innovation Center Logistics and IT (FILIT)" in order to work together on digitization in logistical contexts.

Cooperations and memberships

The Fraunhofer ISST cooperates with other institutes of the Fraunhofer Society in various Fraunhofer alliances and topic groups. The aim is to generate synergies from the most varied of competencies and to jointly develop and further develop innovative subject areas.

In addition, the Fraunhofer ISST is also involved in alliances, collaborations and networks with external research institutions and companies. This exchange ensures a clear focus on application-oriented research and is an important prerequisite for long-term top performance.

Networks within the Fraunhofer Society

  • Fraunhofer Group for Information and Communication Technology (IuK)
  • Fraunhofer Ambient Assisted Living Alliance (AAL)
  • Fraunhofer Cloud Computing Alliance

Memberships

The Fraunhofer ISST is a member of the following networks:

Infrastructure and personnel development

In Dortmund, the institute employs around 70 people in three specialist departments and administration. The specialist departments mainly work for people with a university degree in computer science or business informatics, engineering, mathematics or physics, business administration or economics. There are also numerous students who support the scientific staff in the projects.
