Science Forum Ruhr

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wissenschaftsforum Ruhr e. V. - Working Group of Research Institutes in the Ruhr Area is an association of research institutions in the Ruhr area founded in 2004 , in which contacts between the scientific institutions and with universities, politics, business and administration as well as the dialogue between science and the public are to be promoted. The Wissenschaftsforum Ruhr advocates guaranteeing the financial basis and competitiveness of research in the Ruhr area in order to strengthen the region's innovative strength. The office of the Wissenschaftsforum Ruhr e. V. was at the Institute for Cultural Studies in Essen until 2012 and at Fraunhofer UMSICHT in Oberhausen since 2012 . From the original twelve founding institutes, the number rose to 45 members (as of 2015). Cooperation projects within the forum concern interdisciplinary issues from areas such as health, climate, environment and social change. The activities of the Wissenschaftsforum Ruhr eV include the implementation of various events, joint meetings of employees of the member institutes under the umbrella of the Wissenschaftsforum Ruhr and a monthly newsletter that informs about the activities of the member institutes, publications and job offers from the research network.

aims

The Wissenschaftsforum Ruhr e. V. pursues the following goals in its work:

  • Promotion of cooperation between regional research institutes in the Ruhr area
  • Stimulating cooperation and joint projects
  • Maintaining contact with universities and partners in education, culture, business and politics
  • Strengthening the science culture in the Ruhr area and the dialogue between science and the public
  • To offer a forum for the member institutes in which joint meetings can discuss the implementation of knowledge transfer in society.
  • Promotion of interdisciplinary cooperation
  • Strengthening application-oriented research

History and profile

The Wissenschaftsforum Ruhr eV was constituted as an association on November 5, 2004. Initially, the research network was funded by the Krupp Foundation , and later by the Mercator Foundation . The Mercator Foundation supported the Ruhr Science Forum on the one hand by supporting the office of the Ruhr Science Forum at the Essen Institute for Cultural Studies from 2008 to 2011. On the other hand, specific events and activities of the Science Forum Ruhr were funded (e.g. international science fair "Wissenswelten" on July 15, 2011), events of the series "Science in Focus" (2009-2010), the ring event "The aging society - Challenges and opportunities ”(2009–2010) Since the end of the financial support from Stiftung Mercator, the network has been financed by membership fees and donations. Originally, cooperation and exchange between members corresponded more to the formal clustering of the institutes according to discipline. Over time, the collaboration has focused on important areas of the scientific discourse, which better exploits the potential of interdisciplinary collaboration between the members. Several institutes of the Wissenschaftsforum Ruhr eV are continuously working together on the topic-related platforms of health , industrial culture and transformation and sustainability (as of 2015). A transdisciplinary opening of the platforms to administration, business, politics and culture is intended.

Via the University Alliance Ruhr, the research platform also cooperates with the Ruhr University Bochum, the University of Duisburg-Essen and the TU Dortmund. The aim of the research platform is to take a look at the structures and actors of science and science policy against the background of current science-historical questions, to develop new perspectives and to investigate the question of a specific regional signature of science in the Ruhr area. In the 2015/2016 winter semester, a series of lectures is to take stock and measure the dimensions of a regional history of science.
  • "Health" research platform : The "Health" research platform of the Wissenschaftsforum Ruhr eV promotes the exchange of content between scientists from the Research Institute for Child Nutrition Dortmund (FKE) , the Grönemeyer Institute for Microtherapy Bochum (GIMT), the Institute for Work and Technology Gelsenkirchen (IAT) , the Leibniz Institute for Labor Research Dortmund (IfADo), the PROSOZ Herten software development and consulting company for municipalities, cities and districts mbH and the Rhine-Ruhr Institute for Social Research and Policy Advice eV Duisburg (RISP). Out of this cooperation, the workshop of the science forum "Reality of life and health in structurally weak regions. Multiple problems - energetic answers emerged in February 2014".
