The Mercator GmbH Foundation is a nonprofit, private German foundation that after the Flemish mathematician, cartographer and theologian Gerhard Mercator is named. The foundation was established in 1996 by the Schmidt-Ruthenbeck trading family from Duisburg and partially focuses on the Ruhr area . According to the 2013 annual report, it has paid out foundation capital of 113.6 million euros (2012: 113.1 million euros; 2011: 108.7 million euros) and around 344 million euros in funding to date, and has implemented around 940 projects (as of 2013) . Both foundations have been supported by the higher-level non-profit Meridian Foundation based in Essen since June 2017 .

aims

The Mercator Foundation says it supports projects that promote tolerance and an active exchange of knowledge between people with different national, cultural and social backgrounds in the spirit of Gerhard Mercator. In its science, education and international understanding departments, Stiftung Mercator is both operational and promotional and pursues clearly defined strategic goals in the areas of Europe, climate change, integration and cultural education.

activities

In 2013, 126 projects with a total volume of around EUR 62 million were approved (2012: 123 projects and funding of around 60.5 million; 2011: 109 projects and funding of around 60 million). The North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts was able to use the money from the foundation to set up a young college to support young scientists from North Rhine-Westphalia. There are also subsidies for the disadvantaged. With the project “ Remedial classes for children and young people with a migration background ”, the foundation has supported around 7,700 students and around 1,300 remedial teachers.

In 2008, together with the Volkswagen Foundation and six other foundations, the Mercator Foundation established the Expert Council of German Foundations for Integration and Migration , which examines migration and integration in Germany.

The foundation became active in European politics in 2012 by participating in the image campaign I want Europe . The foundation is increasingly looking to become active in the field of political communication . In addition, the Mercator Foundation supports the integration of Muslims in Germany and contributes to the promotion of Muslim students and doctoral candidates through the Avicenna-Studienwerk .

In June 2007, the Mercator Switzerland Foundation donated over 3.8 million francs to the Swiss Study Foundation over five years.

Stiftung Mercator has been bundling its projects in the areas of climate change, Europe, integration and cultural education since 2010. Perhaps your most prominent project is the Agora Energiewende initiative , which is also supported by the European Climate Foundation . Agora Energiewende sees itself as an energy policy think tank and aims to pave the way for the energy transition through studies, expertise, workshops and similar initiatives.

In 2012 the Mercator Foundation founded the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) together with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK ). The institute in the legal form of a GmbH deals with the question of how important natural resources can be used and protected at the same time. Ottmar Edenhofer has been the director since then .

In 2013 the Mercator Foundation founded the think tank Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), an "Institute of contemporary and practice-oriented China research" in the legal form of a non-profit GmbH with Sebastian Heilmann as founding director.

In 2016 the Agora Verkehrswende was also founded, whose shareholders also consist of the Mercator Foundation and the European Climate Foundation (ECF). The project aims to create a carbon-free transport industry and was financed by the shareholders with 5 million euros until the end of 2018. For the second funding phase, funding of 9 million euros over five years until 2023 was guaranteed.
