Young college

The Young College of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts is a funding program for outstanding young scientists from all disciplines. It has existed since 2006. Its members are appointed for four years each, in order to honor them personally and visibly, to provide them with ideal and financial support in their research, and to provide an interdisciplinary forum for the critical assessment of problems in education and research policy to offer. Overall, the college has a maximum of 30 members.

Admission to the Junge Kolleg requires a doctorate . Possible candidates are those who have distinguished themselves through special scientific achievements without already holding a university teaching position, who are employed at a scientific university or research institution in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and who are not older than 36 when they are accepted. The young fellows receive a research grant of 10,000 euros per year. At the beginning of the course, the scholarships were financed by the Mercator Foundation from Essen .

With the admission of 11 new members (from over 100 applications) of the 2013 class, the Junge Kolleg had 39 members (as of 2013). The announcement for the next year will be made in spring.

The young fellows meet in plenary and currently (2013) four working groups on the subjects of “visualization”, “university policy”, “responsibility” and “science and creativity”. Earlier topics were “ Technology and Society ”, “ Europe's Other? - Other Europe! ”And“ Science topics of the future ”. In 2008 the young fellows held their interdisciplinary discussion on the subject of “Other Worlds”. That was also the name of the research day of the Junge Kolleg, which took place in September 2008. In 2009, the research day was dedicated to the topic of "crises", the following year the topic of "security" was dealt with, followed by "music and technology" in 2011 and a research day on "the well-being of others" last year (2012). The contributions from the research days were published in the anthologies Other Worlds and Security and Crisis .
