Christoph Thole

Christoph Thole (* 1978 in Oldenburg ) is a German lawyer and professor at the University of Cologne .

Life

Thole began studying law at the University of Bayreuth in the 1997/98 winter semester , which he later continued at the University of Münster . There he passed his first state examination in law in 2001. He then worked as a research assistant at Gerhard Wagner , where he received his doctorate in 2003. He did his legal clerkship in Bonn, which he finished in May 2005 with the second exam. Also in 2005 he obtained the title of Diplom-Kaufmann . Then Thole devoted himself to his habilitation. In spring 2007 he was a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago Law School . After another stay abroad at the University of Oxford in February 2008, Thole completed his habilitation in May 2009 at the University of Bonn . He acquired the venia legendi for the subjects civil law, German and international civil procedural law and corporate law.

After substituting professorships in 2009 and 2010 at the Universities of Konstanz and Munich , he took up his first own professorship at the University of Tübingen in the 2010 summer semester . There he held the chair for civil law, civil procedural law, European private law as well as international private and procedural law and received the award for good teaching in 2014. He turned down offers to the universities of Bayreuth and Halle-Wittenberg and Bonn. In the 2016/17 winter semester, Thole accepted an offer from the University of Cologne , where he has held the chair for German and foreign civil procedural law and civil law ever since. He is director of the Institute for Procedural Law and Insolvency Law and the Institute for International and European Insolvency Law. In 2018 Thole was one of the experts in the evaluation of the law to further facilitate the restructuring of companies (ESUG) carried out on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection.

Thole's research focuses in particular on insolvency and corporate law, civil procedure law, and liability and damage law.
