Schmidt-Ruthenbeck

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schmidt-Ruthenbeck family is a German entrepreneurial family that holds a 15.77 percent share in the German retail group Metro AG .

Beginnings

In 1923, Karl Schmidt founded Karl Schmidt OHG in Duisburg's inner harbor , which at the end of the 1960s, as Spar headquarters in Duisburg, supplied over 500 SPAR stores in the region. His two sons Wilhelm Schmidt-Ruthenbeck (born 1906) and Ernst Schmidt (born 1904) founded the first Metro SB wholesale market in Essen / Vogelheim (Nov. 8, 1963). Together with the entrepreneurial family Schell (Mülheim an der Ruhr), Metro-SB Großmärkte GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1964 and the second Metro wholesale market opened in Mülheim / Dümpten. After the opening of the third Metro wholesale store in Berlin / Tiergarten (1965) Otto Beisheim (Mülheim an der Ruhr) and the Haniel Group (Duisburg) expanded the group of shareholders. The Schell family left the group of shareholders in 1965.

Handover to the children

Wilhelm Schmidt (1906–1988) married Vera Ruthenbeck (1914–2006) and took the family name Schmidt-Ruthenbeck. The couple had the children Michael (born 1942), Reiner (1941) and Viola Schmidt-Ruthenbeck. After the death of his father Wilhelm Schmidt-Ruthenbeck at the end of 1988, his company shares were transferred to the two sons Michael and Reiner. Relatives of the company founder are said to have received high severance payments.

  • Michael Schmidt-Ruthenbeck (born December 9, 1942) wrote his dissertation in 1974.
  • Reiner Schmidt-Ruthenbeck (born 1941) renounced his second name Ruthenbeck in 1997.

The company shares were held by Gebr. Schmidt Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH in Essen.

The big brotherly dispute

After the death of the mother Vera Schmidt-Ruthenbeck on January 26th, 2006 a big argument broke out between the brothers Michael Schmidt-Ruthenbeck and Reiner Schmidt. Michael Schmidt-Ruthenbeck had his brother Reiner Schmidt recalled as managing director of Gebr. Schmidt Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH with the help of the Chamber of Commerce of the Essen Regional Court (Feb. 2006).

The dispute was particularly about Michael Schmidt-Ruthenbeck's sale of a 5.39 percent stake in Metro AG. This block of shares was sold by the investment company Suprapart AG at a share price of EUR 43 per share for a total price of around EUR 750 million. After that, the family still had a share of 13.15 percent in Metro AG.

Mercator Foundation

Michael Schmidt-Ruthenbeck contributed the sales proceeds of around 750 million euros to the family's own Mercator Foundation in Essen. This non-profit foundation is dedicated to promoting science, education for children and young people, and international understanding.
