The National Highway 1A ( NH 1A ) is a national highway in India that connects the Kashmir Valley with Jammu and the rest of India. In the new numbering system, the street will be numbered NH 44.
The north end of the road is in Uri in Jammu and Kashmir and the south end is in Jalandhar in Punjab . Sections of the road are at risk from avalanches and landslides blocking the road, especially in winter. The Jawahar Tunnel under Pir Panjal is along the road. The total length of the road is 663 km.
A connection that is less susceptible to the weather and which will shorten the route by 82 km is being planned.
The National Highway Authority has been responsible for running the road since spring 2017 . She took over responsibility from the Border Roads organization , which is now only responsible for the Jawahar tunnel and snow removal between Banihal and Qazigund .
National Highways Development Project
Approximately 554 km of the route are part of the north-south corridor and thus part of the National Highways Development Project .
