The Border Roads Organization (BRO) builds and maintains roads in the border regions of India . The organization was founded in 1960 and is based in New Delhi .

BRO officers come from both the General Reserve Engineer Force and the Indian Army Corps of Engineers . The organization looks after and builds roads that are of strategic importance for the Indian army and has thereby also promoted economic development in the Indian states in the north and north-west of the country. Road construction has to be carried out under sometimes extreme climatic conditions. The road construction teams work on the icy heights of the Himalayas as well as the swampy marshland of West Bengal and in the desert of Rajasthan . The BRO maintains roads up to an elevation of 5600 m (18373 feet). BRO's road network is 32,885 km long; the BRO also looks after bridges with a total length of 12,200 m . She is also involved in the construction of the Rohtang Pass Highway Tunnel at the Rohtang Pass . The BRO is in 22 states and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands operates.

History and structure

The BRO also works abroad on the orders of the Indian government and has carried out construction work in Tajikistan , Afghanistan , Burma and Bhutan .

The BRO also supported the clean-up work after the tsunami in Tamil Nadu (2004), the earthquake in Kashmir (2005) and the flash flood in Ladakh (2010).
