The Rohtang Pass ( Hindi रोहतांग दर्रा ; German "Leichenberg") is a strategically important mountain pass in North India in the interior of the Himalayan Mountains ( Pir Panjal mountain range ) on the route of the Manali-Leh Highway .
It is located in the state of Himachal Pradesh and connects the upper river valley of the Beas in the south ( Kullu valley ) with that of the Chandra , a source river of the Chenab , in the north. The pass officially reaches an altitude of 3978 m above sea level and is located about 50 kilometers northeast of the city of Manali .
A road connection, the National Highway , which is only passable in the summer months , connects the north-west Indian Punjab with the mountain (and border regions) of Ladakh . The pass is both a weather and a cultural divide: it separates the rather humid, monsoon-coated Hindu regions of the hill and midlands from the Buddhist, desert-like high mountain regions of the Himalayas.
Depending on the weather, the pass will be closed in the winter months, which can last from October to June. It usually takes four to six weeks until the opening in June (in extreme cases also at the end of May), during which the workers deployed as road construction teams in summer clear the pass from the masses of snow. At the foot of the Rohtang there is a small ski area in winter, which is also a popular destination for wedding parties.
The 8.8 kilometer long Rohtang Pass Highway Tunnel with two lanes has been under construction since spring 2010 . The tunnel portals are at a height of around 3100 m . The tunnel runs a few kilometers west of today's pass road. In summer 2018 it was announced that the tunnel would be opened to traffic in November 2019. The tunnel not only reduces the distance by 46 kilometers and the travel time by several hours - first and foremost, it ensures that the region north of the pass can be reached all year round. It is the longest tunnel at an altitude of over 3000 meters.
