Manali ( Hindi मनाली, Manālī) is a city ( Municipal Council ) with a population of 8096 inhabitants (2011 census) in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh at the northern end of the Kullu valley . The important base station in the mountain region belongs administratively to the Kullu district .

location

Manali is located at an altitude of 1949  m on the Beas River , 40 km north of the city of Kullu and 50 km south of the Rohtang Pass . The city is divided into what is now the modern market and tourist center of Manali, the old British post office “Duff Dunbar” on the right of the Beas, the now completely built-up Aleo on the left bank of the Beas, and the original “Old Manali”, around 2–3 km northwest above Manalsu Nalla, picturesquely situated on a hill with orchards, traditional stone and mud houses and free-range cattle.

history

Manali literally means "home of Manu". Manu was a mythical king who, according to legend, survived when the world was ravaged by the great flood. According to one version, his ark fell to solid ground at Manali after the flood, and Manu became the forefather of mankind. The region of Manali is considered holy and Hindus make pilgrimages from far and wide to the holy places, especially to the temple of the goddess Hidimba Devi in the millennial cedar forest of Dhungri.

Manali lies at the beginning of an old trade route to Ladakh and from there on over the Karakorum Pass to Yarkant and Khotan in the Tarim Basin . Today Manali is the starting point of the strategically important National Highway to Ladakh ("Manali Leh Road").

Since the second half of the 19th century, Manali became interesting for British officers, who retired to the then closed Kullu valley. Even today the descendants of Col. Bannon are important in Manali. Especially since the increased terror in the Kashmir Valley in 1989/90, the tourism infrastructure in Manali exploded.

meaning

Today Manali is a popular tourist destination in the Himalayas and one of the main mountaineering towns in Asia with the headquarters of the Western Himalayan Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports .

Due to the mild summer climate and its famous temples, it is primarily a destination for Indian tourists and a starting point for high mountain tours and sporting activities for Indian and foreign tourists.

traffic

The nearest airport is Bhuntar , 52 km south of Manali, which is served directly from New Delhi via Shimla . The next narrow-gauge railway ends in Joginder Nagar , about 135 km west of Manali. The closest major city is Kullu , from which the city is served by private and public buses and taxis. The Manali-Leh Highway connects Himachal Pradesh with the capital Leh of the Ladakh province .
