Club career

Career start in Canada

Ricketts was born in Edmonton , Alberta , to a couple who emigrated from Jamaica . Through his older brother Kirk, who among other things was not very successful in the men's soccer team of the sports department of the University of Memphis from 1999 to 2001 , Tosaint Ricketts came to soccer, but also played basketball in his youth. Ricketts began his active club career at the local youth training clubs Edmonton Juventus and South West Sting , where he was also used parallel to his high school days. At this time he attended St. Francis Xavier High School in his hometown of Edmonton, where he was also a member of the school's soccer team and was successful with it for several years. After his time in high school, the Jamaican-born Ricketts was accepted by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay , UW-Green Bay for short . There, the trained striker quickly established himself as one of the top scorers for the entire team. In 2005 he was second in the team's scorer list with nine points and was able to repeat this performance in 2006, where he even achieved 17 scorer points. In addition, he was elected to the "All Horizon League Second Team" and the "All Tournament Team" that year and was also drafted into the Canadian junior squad in the following year, with which he was at the Junior World Championships in their own country . That year he was used in numerous games during his time at the university and scored six goals, five of which were decisive. Elections to the "All Horizon League First Team" and the "All Tournament Team" were the reward for the achievements that Ricketts achieved this season. At the end of the year he finished his studies in business administration and thus left the university and the associated sports department.

Comeback in Finland

After that, the Jamaican striker stayed almost two years without a club station worth mentioning before he moved to Finland , where he was able to convince with the local first division club Myllykosken Pallo -47 . There he was accepted in early March 2009 and was given the number 14. During his time at the University Preparatory School , Ricketts was considered one of the fastest short distance runners in Alberta, which in turn was very helpful for his career as a football player. He was also praised for his speed by his coach there and those responsible at the Finnish club. After showing his quality in the friendly matches, he found his way into the team relatively quickly as one of the regular players. Ricketts finally made his professional debut on May 2, 2009 in a 0-0 home draw against Inter Turku , when he came on for the offensive defensive player Ilari Äijälä in the 66th minute and scored a goal in the same game, which was not given due to an offside has been. For his first goal, however, he came soon after, when he scored the decisive goal for the 1-0 win over HJK Helsinki ; Toni Lindberg contributed the template . Throughout the 2009 season , Ricketts made 16 championship appearances in which he scored five goals. Although he only ranked ninth with the team and was thus quite far behind from the top of the table, he made it to the first qualifying round for the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League with the team via fair play . There Ricketts finally triumphed clearly and made it with the team, mainly through his help, into the third qualifying round of the competition , where they were finally defeated by FC Timișoara from Romania 4: 5 on a two-legged basis and thus progressed failed in the current competition.

For the young Canadian personally, however, the qualification phase was tailor-made. After he managed 90 minutes without scoring in the first leg of the first qualifying round against JK Trans Narva on July 1, 2010 , he was already successful as a goalscorer in the later 5-0 second leg win. Even with the clear successes over UE Sant Julià , where Ricketts was only used in one encounter, he was again successful as a goalscorer. He finally brought special performances in the third qualifying round, where the team met FC Timișoara. While he scored the only goal of his team in the 1: 2 defeat in the first leg, he scored twice as a goal scorer in the subsequent 3: 3 draw in the second leg. Nevertheless, he retired with the team with a total score of 4: 5 from the current competition. At the same time, Ricketts was also successful in the league as an offensive force and goal getter. He got four hits and two assists in 24 league appearances by the end of the 2010 season . With the team, however, he did not make it away from ninth place in the table and was also in the closely staggered table for a long time in a relegation battle. After renewing his contract with MYPA in September 2009, he left the club during 2010.

Time at FC Timișoara

Previously with MYPA until October 2010, he left the club the following month for Romania, where he caught the eye of Romanian first division club FC Timișoara because of his performance during the UEFA Europa League, in which he scored as many goals in five appearances was. He then signed a three-year contract with the Romanians and was given the number 87 on his back, the year he was born. He made his league debut for the Romanian club more than two months after signing his contract. He came on February 26, 2011 in the 3-1 win over Gaz Metan Mediaş in the 72nd minute of play for the Slovak international Marián Čišovský on the lawn. Already in his second league appearance, a 2-1 away win over CFR Cluj , he scored his first goal for the Romanians when he came on for Ovidiu Burcă in the 71st minute and to the 2-1 win in the 78th minute met his team. At the end of his first season , Ricketts won with FC Timișoara the runner-up behind Oțelul Galați , but rose forcibly into League II due to the club's chronic over-indebtedness . Although he succeeded in the following season with the team of athletic resurgence, FC Timişoara was denied the license for League 1 due to the ongoing financial difficulties . In this context, Ricketts did not receive a salary for months, so he was able to terminate his contract, dated June 30, 2013, early. In total, the native Canadian came to use in 23 league games for the club from the western Romanian city of Timișoara and scored six goals.

Ricketts returned to his Canadian homeland for the 2016 season and joined Toronto FC . In Major League Soccer , he mostly came on as a substitute. He reached the final with his team after he had contributed the decisive goal in extra time against Montreal Impact in the semifinals . In the final against Seattle Sounders FC he was substituted on in extra time and was not used in the ultimately lost penalty shoot-out.

National team career

His actual career in the youth national teams of Canada began for Ricketts in his high school days, when he was brought to the U-17 national team in his home country at the age of 15. But after he was mostly only allowed to train with and had little chance of a mission, let alone an establishment in the team, Ricketts only came to an unofficial international match for the U-17 selection. He had this on July 20, 2004 in a test match against a selection of the USA, where he was used over half time and also scored a goal. After little match practice, which he gained with the U-17 team, he joined Canada's junior squad the following year. As a barely 18-year-old, he played in two unofficial international matches in July 2005, in which, however, he remained goalless. Another but unofficial use he was finally able to record at the end of February 2007 when he scored the two goals of his team in a test match against the team from Lynn University , which led to the 2-1 victory over the American college team. About a month later, Ricketts made his official U-20 international debut when he scored two goals for his home country in a 3-1 friendly win against Scotland, even though he was only on the pitch for 28 minutes. Until June 2007 he was used in five more matches and scored a hat trick in a 4-0 win over his colleagues from the USA.

Because of his performance, he was finally appointed by long-time junior national coach Dale Mitchell in the 21-man squad of Canada , which should take part in the Junior World Cup in his own country in the same year . Ricketts was used in all three matches of his team, but could not really assert himself with the team and was eliminated in the group stage with no points and goalless from the World Cup. For the striker, who soon celebrated his 20th birthday, this was also his last appearance in the junior national team in his home country. In the following March, Ricketts was used for the first time in the U-23 selection of Canada, where he was initially only used in two unofficial games. Among other things, he also managed a double in one encounter. He made his official debut for the U-23s a week later, when he was in the squad that took part in the CONCACAF qualification for the football tournament at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He was used in a total of five games this month, where he managed, among other things, a brace in the game against Guatemala (5-0). It should be noted that Ricketts won every time in all of his unofficial games (six games recorded).

After he drew attention to himself during his time in Finland and finally made the leap into the Romanian House of Lords, Ricketts was considered for the first time with a place in the senior national team of Canada . In the friendly international match against Greece , in which in addition to Ricketts also the players Milan Bjoran and David Edgar made their debut, Ricketts, who was trained as a center forward, was substituted on for Josh Simpson in the 78th minute ; the game ended in a 1-0 defeat for the Canadians. In the game against Ecuador on June 2, 2011, he scored his first goal with the equalizer in the last minute of the game.
