Gregory Kurtley van der Wiel (born February 3, 1988 in Amsterdam ) is a former Dutch football player .
Life and family
Van der Wiel is in a relationship with the Belgian model Rose Bertram . Their daughter was born in Toronto in February 2018.
Career

Van der Wiel, whose father comes from Curaçao , first played as a child for RKSV Door Combinatie Groot in his hometown of Amsterdam. From 1996 he was trained in the youth department of the AFC Ajax . After six years he was loaned to the HFC Haarlem , as those responsible stated that there was a “lack of attitude”. After proving himself at HFC over three years, he returned to Ajax in 2005. From the 2006/07 season he was part of the professional squad of Amsterdam, which won the Dutch Supercup, the Johan Cruijff Schaal , in August 2006 . Van der Wiel made his professional debut on March 11, 2007 in a 4-1 away win against FC Twente in Enschede . Four missions in central defense followed, but van der Wiel couldn't get past the regulars in these defensive positions, Jaap Stam and Thomas Vermaelen . In the 2007/08 season van der Wiel was allowed to play in the Supercup game when he came on as a substitute for George Ogăraru in the 1-0 win against PSV in the 26th minute . However, he remained a substitute player, in addition, made him a knee injury to create. In season 2008/09 he was under coach Marco van Basten for the full-back turned and advanced on the right wing for stem force. On March 1, 2009 (25th matchday) van der Wiel scored his first competitive goal in a 2-0 away win against FC Utrecht .
On September 3, 2012 van der Wiel moved to the French first division club Paris Saint-Germain . He signed a four-year contract with the capital club until June 30, 2016.
After his contract in Paris expired, he joined Fenerbahçe Istanbul in July 2016 on a free transfer . On the Bosporus , van der Wiel received a contract until 2020. In the summer of 2017, van der Wiel moved to Cagliari Calcio .
On February 1, 2018, he left the Sardinian club and signed a contract with the champions of Major League Soccer , Toronto FC from Canada. With the team he won the Canadian Championship in 2018 .
In January 2019 there was an argument between van der Wiels and Toronto FC's head coach Greg Vanney. This dispute was so serious that van der Wiel's contract was terminated.
In the summer of 2019, van der Wiel announced the end of his career.
National team
Van der Wiel made his senior national team debut on February 11, 2009 under coach Bert van Marwijk in a 1-1 draw in the international test match against Tunisia , when he came on for John Heitinga in the 86th minute . In his debut year, three more appearances followed, as well as four during the World Cup qualification , in which he played from the start. After three more international A matches in 2010 , he was used a total of five times at the World Cup in South Africa . It was also used three times in the 2012 European Football Championship .
