Thomas Vermaelen (born November 14, 1985 in Kapellen ) is a Belgian football player .
Career
In the club
Vermaelen's career began in the youth of Germinal Ekeren . In 1999 the club changed its name to Germinal Beerschot . For the 2003/04 season , the defender moved to Ajax Amsterdam . After he had only been used there in his first year as a professional, he was given on loan to RKC Waalwijk for the following season . In Waalwijk he was used more regularly and scored his first league goal. He returned to Ajax for the 2005/06 season . During this season he developed into a regular player. In the next two years he won the KNVB Cup and the Johan Cruyff Schaal twice with the team .
In June 2009 Vermaelen went to Arsenal FC . In the 2009/10 season he was a regular defender alongside William Gallas and should the summer to Manchester City exchanged Kolo Toure replaced. Vermaelen scored the 2-0 goal in the first game of the English Premier League in the game against Everton , which ended 6-1 for Arsenal. Vermaelen scored a total of seven goals in the Premier League. At the end of the season in the game against Tottenham Hotspur he was injured and was out for the rest of the season. He was voted into the PFA Team of the Year .
After Robin van Persie left for Manchester United , Vermaelen was named the new team captain by coach Arsène Wenger . In the 2013/2014 season, Vermaelen completed his 100th league game for Arsenal. Because of many injuries, he only made 14 Premier League appearances and was usually only the third choice in central defense behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny .
For the 2014/15 season , Vermaelen moved to the Spanish Primera División for FC Barcelona a year before the end of his contract . He signed a five-year contract and cost 10 million euros transfer fee, which can increase from a certain number of stakes (by 5 million euros) and when winning the UEFA Champions League (by 3.8 million euros). On the last day of the match he made his debut in the league and for FC Barcelona in a 2-2 game against Deportivo La Coruña and was involved in the championship title. The following season he started as a regular and in the second game his first league goal was also the winning goal against FC Málaga . In the third game he was injured again and was out for a long time. At the turn of the year he played two full games, but then only made occasional short appearances. At the end of the season he was injured again. Nevertheless, he was able to successfully defend the championship title with the club. In addition to the league, he was also used in five cups and three Champions League matches.
For the 2016/17 season , Vermaelen switched to the Italian Serie A at AS Roma on loan with an option to buy . There he completed nine league games.
For the season 2017/18 returned Vermaelen back to Barcelona. With 14 league appearances, he played more often than ever at FC Barcelona this season. In the season 2018/19 followed nine league assignments. He then left the club when his contract ended.
At the end of July 2019, Vermaelen joined the Japanese first division club Vissel Kobe . In the first season he won the Kaiserpokal (Japanese Football Cup) with Köbe .
In the national team
Vermaelen had between 2004 and 2007 for the U-21 Belgium played before he first time in the squad of the senior team was appointed. He made his debut in the game against Luxembourg (2-0). With the U-23 team he took part in the 2008 Olympic Games and came to five missions.
Vermaelen and the Belgian team qualified for the 2014 World Cup ; he was nominated for the Belgian squad by national coach Marc Wilmots . He was used in the second group game against Russia .
During the European Championship qualification 2014/15 he was injured most of the time and was only used twice. In the preparatory games for the 2016 European Football Championship in France, he returned and was included in the Belgian squad for the European Championship. In the group matches and in the round of 16, he was on the pitch for 90 minutes and was banned in the quarter-finals, which his team lost to Wales, after his second yellow card in the tournament.
