Marc Wilmots (born February 22, 1969 in Dongelberg ) is a Belgian soccer coach , politician and former soccer player . Most recently he was the head coach of the national team of Iran .

Player career

Wilmots began his career at CS Jodoigne . From 1985 he played for VV St. Truiden . For the 1988/89 season he moved to KV Mechelen . He won the European Supercup with Mechelen in 1988 and became Belgian champion in 1989. In 1991 he switched to Standard Liège . With the club he won the Belgian Cup in 1993. At the age of 24 he had a request from Borussia Dortmund's then coach Ottmar Hitzfeld , but he preferred to stay in Liège as his wife was doing her law degree. For the 1996/97 season he moved to FC Schalke 04 . In the 1996/97 season he won the UEFA Cup with FC Schalke 04 . In the penalty shootout in the final against Inter Milan , he converted the decisive penalty to victory. Because of his always combative attitude, his nickname with the fans was "Willi, the fighting pig". In 2000 he moved to Girondins Bordeaux , but returned to FC Schalke 04 after just one season. In the 2001/02 season he won the DFB Cup with FC Schalke 04 . In 2002 he was nominated for the Ballon d'Or .

National team

In the Belgian national team , Wilmots made his debut in May 1990. A month later he was part of the Belgian squad at the 1990 World Cup , but was not used. Four years later he took part in the 1994 World Cup and reached the round of 16, but remained without a goal. At the 1998 World Cup , Belgium was eliminated in the preliminary round, but this time Wilmots scored two goals. Belgium was one of the two hosts at the 2000 European Championships , but was eliminated in the preliminary round. At the 2002 World Cup , Wilmots scored three goals. When eliminated in the round of 16, a goal he scored against Brazil was not recognized. Brazil won 2-0 and Belgium were eliminated. After the World Cup, Wilmots ended his career in the national team.

Coaching career

After Frank Neubarth's dismissal as coach of FC Schalke 04 in March 2003, Wilmots ended his career and became coach of FC Schalke 04. After the 2002/03 season, he was replaced by Jupp Heynckes . For the 2004/05 season he took over the coaching position at VV St. Truiden , but was released in February 2005. In October 2009 he became assistant coach to Dick Advocaat for the Belgian national team . After Advocaat's successor, Georges Leekens , resigned in May 2012, Wilmots took over the management of the “Red Devils” as interim coach for the games against Montenegro and England . After the games he got a permanent position as national coach. After the team had qualified as the winner of European Group A for the World Cup in Brazil , Wilmots was voted “ Coach of the Year ” in December 2013 . The collaboration with the Belgian Football Association was then set up for the long term and the contract period was extended to 2018. The collaboration ended in July 2016.

On March 21, 2017, Wilmots took over as coach of the Ivorian national team . After missing the qualification for the World Cup in Russia, the cooperation was ended on November 13, 2017.

On May 15, 2019, the Iranian Football Association introduced the Belgian as the new head coach of the national team of Iran . His contract was valid until 2022. At the beginning of December 2019, the Belgian resigned from his employment due to a lack of salary payments from the association.

Wilmots is also active as a politician. He is a member of the liberal Mouvement Réformateur party and was a member of the Belgian Senate from 2003 to 2005 .
