Guy Jean Léonard Thys (born December 6, 1922 in Antwerp , † August 1, 2003 ) was a Belgian football coach .

Career

Guy Thys played two international matches for his home country (both against the Netherlands ) between 1952 and 1953 and was called up to the national team four times in the two years.

Guy Thys coached the Belgian national football team from 1976 to 1989 . Then he took a break of six months and took the position after Walter Meeuws had been dismissed again until May 1991. He led the national team in 1980 in the final of the European Championship , which they lost 2-1 to Germany .

In 1982, 1986 and 1990, the Red Devils , led by Guy Thys, qualified for the World Cup . They had the greatest success with 4th place in Mexico in 1986. In the semi-finals his team lost 2-0 to Argentina .

In total, the national team played 114 games under him. Of these, she won 50 games, drawn 27 times, and lost 37 games.

Trivia

Guy Thys is the son of two-time Belgian top scorer Ivan Thys (1897-1982). His uncle, Ivan Thys's brother, is Joseph Thys (1888–1941) , who was also in the Belgian national team .
