KSK Beveren ( Koninklijke Sportkring Beveren ) was a professional football club from the Belgian town of Beveren near Antwerp .

history

The club was founded in 1935 and remained in the lower leagues until 1948. In 1966 KSK Beveren rose to the second division and Guy Thys became a coach. Under his leadership, KSK Beveren rose to the First Division for the first time .

KSK Beveren's heyday began in the 1977/78 season, when the club won the final of the Belgian Cup against Sporting Charleroi for the first time . The following season, SK Beveren became Belgian champions and was successful in the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup against Inter Milan . In the semifinals, however, they lost to FC Barcelona . In 1983 KSK Beveren was again cup winner and in 1984 Belgian champion for the second time. In 1989 the club's heyday was over and KSK Beveren was relegated and promoted twice.

In the spring of 2001, the former French professional footballer Jean-Marc Guillou joined the club. At the end of the 2001/02 season, KSK Beveren landed in 18th place in the first division. However, the club did not relegate because Eendracht Aalst and RWD Molenbeek did not receive a license for the coming season. Guillou became the club's manager in 2002. At that time KSK Beveren was in serious financial and sporting problems. In the following season, the club experienced an upswing. This upswing was made possible by the change of many players from the Guillou football school in Abidjan ( Ivory Coast ) and a collaboration with Arsenal FC . Through the collaboration, players like Graham Stack and Igors Stepanovs were loaned to SK Beveren.

In the 2003/04 season, KSK Beveren was inferior to Club Bruges in the final of the Belgian Cup . As the Bruges finished second in the championship, Beveren qualified for the UEFA Cup . There he advanced into the group stage, but retired without winning a point.

In the spring of 2006, Jean-Marc Guillou was released. In the following years Beveren ran into financial difficulties again and in 2009 was relegated to the 2nd division . In May the unofficial merger with KVRS Red Star Waasland to KVRS Waasland - SK Beveren took place .
