KV Red Star Waasland - Sportkring Beveren (better known under the short name Waasland-Beveren ) is a Belgian football club from Beveren . The club colors are red, yellow and blue. The club was founded as Voetbalclub Red Star Nieuwkerken-Waas and joined the Royal Belgian Football Association in 1944 under the name KFC Red Star Haasdonk . In 2002 the club moved to the Puyenbebe stadium in Sint-Niklaas and in 2010, after the unofficial merger with the KSK Beveren club, back to Beveren to the Freethiel stadium .

history

On May 1st, 1936 the Voetbalclub Red Star Nieuwkerken-Waas was founded. This first joined the Vlaamsche Voetbal Bond and only became a member of the official Belgian association in 1944, albeit under the name Red Star Haasdonk . In 1986 the association was given the attribute "royal".

Red Star played in the fifth-rate regional league East Flanders. 2000 succeeded there the championship and thus the promotion to the national fourth league. Here, with one point ahead of Eendracht Meldert, he again achieved first place and thus the direct march through to the third class. There the team finished sixth in their first season. At the end of the season, the club moved to Belsele, a sub-municipality of the city of Sint-Niklaas , in the larger Puyenbekestadion, where the Sint-Niklase SKE club had played until 2000 . The club name was therefore changed to KV Red Star Waasland .

After an eighth place in 2003, 2004 was the third time in five years a first place in the table. Thus, the club rose to the second division. With two points ahead of AFC Tubize , the team was able to qualify as fifth in the table for the promotion games to the 1st division . Without a win and with only two draws, the sensation was clearly missed and KSV Roeselare had to give way.

In 2006 the team finished fourth, but missed the promotion games. However, Kristof Arys , who scored 18 goals, was the top scorer in the second division. In the Belgian Cup competition , Red Star was eliminated 1-0 against local rivals KSK Beveren and in the 2007/2008 season in the round of 16 with a 2-0 win against RSC Anderlecht . In the 2008/2009 season, Red Star reached fourth place and once again placed the top scorer in Hervé Ndjana Onana , who had scored 26 goals.

Local rivals KSK Beveren ran into financial and sporting problems in spring 2010. On May 20, 2010, the clubs announced their unofficial merger. An official and legal merger was ruled out because of the debt burden of KSK Beveren. The first team of KSK Beveren was disbanded and KV Red Star Waasland was renamed KVRS Waasland - SK Beveren . The club also moved to the Freethiel stadium in Beveren . The club colors are a combination of the yellow and red colors of Red Star Waasland and the yellow and blue colors of Beveren.

The greatest success so far after the merger was the promotion to the 1st division for the 2012/13 season, where they qualified second over the relegation games to the first division. In the following years, Waasland-Beveren always occupied a place in the lower half of the table in the main round. In the subsequent play-off round, the club failed to qualify for the European Cup.

On November 18, 2018, Adnan Čustović was signed as coach . The club ended the 2018/19 season penultimate. However, the gap to the relegation zone was seven points.

In the new 2019/20 season, Waasland-Beveren was in last place in the table with just one point after five match days. On August 26, 2019, Čustović was dismissed as a coach. The previous assistant trainer Dirk Geeraerd took over the training for the time being.

On August 30, 2019, the signing of Arnauld Mercier as the new coach, who would take over the training after the next game, was announced. On the 27th matchday of the 2019/20 season, Waasland-Beveren slipped to the bottom of the table. Mercier was then released. For the last three game days, assistant coach Dirk Geeraerd took over the training.

The outcome of the 2019/20 season

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the last day of the main round (like all other sporting events) was prohibited by the National Security Council on March 12, 2020. This ban has been extended several times and applies until July 31, 2020 (even without spectators). The general assembly of the Pro League clubs then decided to end the season. The abort table, in which Waasland-Beveren was in last place, decided on the relegation. Accordingly, the club rose to Division 1B . Waasland-Beveren had instead proposed to suspend relegation this season and to play with 18 clubs in the coming season. On May 25, 2020, the club appealed to the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport.

On July 8, 2020, the arbitral tribunal declared the decision of the General Assembly regarding the relegation invalid. It was an incomprehensible unequal treatment that the table status at the end of the season was used for the question of relegation from Division 1A. In Division 1B only the second promotion game was open at this time, and it was insisted on carrying out the same decision. (Since according to the legal situation in May there was an absolute sports ban until July 31, 2020, this game was scheduled for August 2, 2020.)

The Pro League board of directors decided on July 13, 2020 to hold on to the relegation decision against Waasland-Beveren. It should just be better justified. The final decision can only be made by a general assembly of all associations, which cannot take place until July 31, 2020 due to the invitation period. Waasland did not agree to an early implementation.

On July 24, 2020, the club filed a lawsuit against Pro League before the Dendermonde Commercial Court . In the opinion of the association, the decision on relegation would currently be canceled, so that Waasland-Beveren should be listed in the division 1A schedule until a new decision by the general assembly. With a ruling of July 30, 2020, the court followed this view and set a fine of 2.5 million euros for every game played after the invalid game schedule. At the same time, the court emphasized that the planned new reasoning was not sufficient either, so that it would repeat this judgment if Waasland appealed to the arbitral tribunal again after a corresponding decision by the general assembly.

Pro League temporarily withdrew the schedule on the same day.

president

Dirk Huyck has been the club's president since January 2016 . He took over this position after an 18-month term from Jozef Van Remoortel , who was now vice-president of the association.
