The Division 1A 2018/19 was the 116th season of the highest Belgian league for men's soccer . The opening game took place on July 27, 2018.
The KV Mechelen rose after eleven seasons as bottom of the previous season . As the champion of the second division 1B , Cercle Bruges played first class again after three years of second division.
Season course
Sporting Lokeren was already relegated two game days before the end of the first round, and KRC Genk won their fourth Belgian national championship. Mechelen became champions of the 2nd division and cup winners, and was able to move back to the 1st division and qualify for the group stage of the Europa League .
On June 1, 2019, the Appeals Committee of the Belgian Football Union decided to punish Mechelen for the manipulation of the game KV Mechelen against Waasland-Beveren on March 11, 2018 in the 2017/18 season in the first division by withdrawing promotion to the first division . Mechelen would have remained in Division 1B in the 2019/20 season. In addition, Mechelen is not allowed to participate in the Europa League . Instead of Mechelen, the loser of the promotion games, KFCO Beerschot Wilrijk , would have been promoted to the first division.
On June 6, 2019, the club appealed against this decision to the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport. The judgment could not be carried out until its decision. On July 10, 2019, the arbitral tribunal determined that withdrawing the ascent was not one of the possible sanctions. Thus, KV Mechelen will play in the first division in the 2019/20 season. The arbitral tribunal did not comment on the question of participation in the European Cup.
After UEFA decided on July 16, 2019 to provisionally admit KV Mechelen as a participant in the group stage of the Europa League , the Belgian court of arbitration for sport gave its final judgment on July 17, 2019. KV Mechelen is allowed to move up to the first division and does not receive any point deduction there. However, the exclusion of the club from the Belgian Cup and the Europa League in the 2019/20 season remains.
The following day, UEFA decided that all Belgian clubs in the Europa League would move up by one qualifying round. The UEFA applied here the rules of a license refusal for the European Cup. As a result, Standard Liège starts third in the play-off round in the group stage. Royal Antwerp had won the Europa League play-off final as fourth in the play-off round and would have started in the second qualifying round. It now starts in the 3rd qualifying round. KAA Gent is the next club in the final table (5th place) to move up to the last free place in the 2nd qualifying round.

mode
The 16 clubs initially played the regular season in a double round. The final table served as the basis for qualifying for various placement rounds. The schedule for this double round was published on June 12, 2018.
The six best-placed clubs reached the championship round (play-offs 1), the teams in positions seven to fifteen played for a possible international starting place (play-offs 2). After the end of the 30 game days, the bottom of the table was relegated directly to the winner of the promotion play-offs of Division 1B in the coming season.
With the introduction of the new Division 1B for the 2016/17 season, a professional, eight-club, second-highest division, the mode of play-offs 2 changed. The nine teams placed 7th to 15th in the table play play-off 2 together the three best clubs (with the exception of the promoted to the Pro League) from Division 1B. The total of twelve teams are divided into two groups of six clubs each (called play-off 2A and play-off 2B), each of which plays against each other once. The winners of these two groups play off the winner of Play-offs 2 in one game, which then competes against the fourth or fifth place in Play-offs 1 for an international starting place.
It should also be noted that in the championship round half of the number of points achieved from the 30 games in the preliminary round is carried over, so that the further matches can only cause minor changes depending on the table situation. The points from the 1st round were rounded up if necessary, but reduced by one point in the event of a tie.
In contrast to other leagues, such as the Bundesliga , the game plans for the round two were not identical (with rotated home law). Rather, a completely different game plan was created for the second half of the season.
There is also a peculiarity in the calculation basis for table placement in the event of a tie. Similar to some other European leagues, the first thing that counts is a direct comparison of wins and only then the goal difference.

Gouden bull
The Gouden Stier (German golden bull ) was awarded to the best goalscorer of the season. The hits of the Play-off 2 finals were not included in the statistics. After the goals scored, a lower required playing time, then the number of assists and finally the lower number of goals from penalty kicks served as the basis for placement.
