Ivan Santini (born May 21, 1989 in Zadar , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian soccer player who currently plays for the Chinese club Jiangsu Suning .

Career

youth

Santini began his active career as a football player in his hometown, where he also grew up, in the youth division of NK Zadar . There he went through almost all the youth teams and in 2006 switched to the youth department of the NK Inter Zaprešić from the city of Zaprešić, only 17 kilometers west of the capital Zagreb . There he was in the squad of the youth until the end of the year and also trained a few times with the professional team of the club, which has their game operations in the 1st HNL , the top division in Croatian football.

At the beginning of January 2007 Santini came to the youth department of the Austrian club FC Red Bull Salzburg , where he also attended their academy. In the following year and a half, he played 17 league games for the academy team in the U-19 youth league and scored seven goals.

Club career

In July 2008, Santini left the Salzburg Academy and was without a club until February 2009. In mid-February, he completed a trial training session at the German second division club FC Ingolstadt 04 . On February 20, Santini's move to Germany was confirmed. Before that, the young Croat played a test match at the Belgian club Standard Liège in December 2008 , but could not convince there.

He made his professional debut for the Ingolstadt club on March 8, 2009 in the 2: 3 away defeat against TSV 1860 Munich , when he came on for Valdet Rama in the 72nd minute .

It is noteworthy that Santini played under three different coaches in the professional team during his short club membership of almost four months at FC Ingolstadt. So he played until April 21st under coach Thorsten Fink , who was then on leave from the club's management. Then he came under Michael Wiesinger , who acted as interim trainer for a few days, and at the end he completed a championship game under Horst Köppel . In addition to the professional team, Santini also played four games (three goals) for the second team of FC Ingolstadt 04 in the fifth-class Bayernliga .

After the Ingolstadt team was relegated to the 3rd football league , Santini did not receive a contract extension and subsequently presented to FC Basel in Switzerland and to the Austrian Bundesliga club LASK Linz ; but there was no obligation in each case.

In August 2009 he signed a contract with the Croatian first division club NK Zadar. After 26 goals in 64 league appearances for Zadar, Santini moved back to Germany in late January 2012. The relegation-threatened Bundesliga club SC Freiburg loaned Santini for half a year and also has a purchase option.

On February 5, 2012, under coach Christian Streich , he made his debut for SC in the game against Werder Bremen when he came on for Jan Rosenthal in the 62nd minute of the game . At the end of the season, SC Freiburg let the purchase option for Santini expire, but later loaned him out again for the 2012/13 season. In the 20th game for SC Freiburg on April 21, 2013 (30th matchday), he scored his first Bundesliga goal in the 1: 2 defeat in the away game against VfB Stuttgart with the connection goal in the 88th minute.

After the end of the 2012/13 season, Santini did not receive a new contract from his club in Zadar and was no longer obliged by SC Freiburg. He then moved to Belgium for KV Kortrijk in the Pro League . There he received a contract until 2016. For Kortrijk, Santini scored 15 league goals in each of his first two seasons. In June 2015, his move to league rival Standard Liège was announced, with whom he signed a four-year contract.

He left Standard Liège after just one season and moved to the French club SM Caen . After playing there for two years, he moved to the Belgian RSC Anderlecht at the beginning of the 2018/19 season .

For a transfer fee of 5 million euros, Santini moved to the Chinese club Jiangsu Suning in the summer of 2019 .
