The KV Kortrijk ( Koninklijke Voetbalclub Kortrijk , German: "Royal Football Club Kortrijk ") is a Belgian football club from Kortrijk . The club was created in 1971 through a merger of the clubs SC Courtraisien and Stade Kortrijk. Since the 2008/09 season, the first team has played consistently in the Belgian first division . The team was first class from 1976 to 1979, from 1980 to 1992 and again in the 1998/1999 season.

history

The SC Courtraisien was founded in 1901; from 1906 to 1911 he played in the top Belgian league. From 1927 the club was called Royal Courtrai Sports (after merging with FC Courtraisien ), from 1951 it was officially given the Dutch name Koninklijke Kortrijk Sport .

Stade Kortrijk was created in 1923 from the two associations Eendracht Kortrijk and Patronaat Sint-Rochus .

On May 6, 1971 the merger of the two associations was completed; the city colors of Kortrijk, red and white, were chosen as the club colors. Only five years later, the new club was promoted from the fourth division to the 1st division .

The team plays their home games in the Kortrijk Guldensporenstadion, which can accommodate 9,399 visitors . The coach is Yves Vanderhaeghe .

Well-known KV Kortrijk players were Emile Mpenza and his brother Mbo Mpenza , Hendrik Krüzen , Stefan Leleu , Aurelio Vidmar and Salou Ibrahim .

Since the last promotion to the First Division of Belgium Kortrijk could not qualify for the European Cup. After serving as president for 19 years, Joseph Allijns resigned on June 26, 2020 for personal reasons. Ronny Verhelst was elected as his successor .
