The K Beerschot VA (officially: Koninklijke Beerschot Voetbalclub Antwerp; German "Royal Beerschot Football Club Antwerp "), until 2019 KFCO Beerschot Wilrijk , is a Belgian football club from the Antwerp district of Wilrijk . Its home stadium is the Antwerp Olympic Stadium with 12,771 seats.

history

The club was founded in 1922 as Football Club Wilrijk and joined the Royal Belgian Football Association (KBFV) with membership number 155 .

The team played for a long time mainly in the lower divisions of the Belgian league system and had both promotions and relegations to book, while neither title nor cup successes were achieved.

1973 the KFC Wilrijk merged with the neighboring club Olympia Wilrijk 72 and became the KFC Olympia Wilrijk . Another merger took place in 2013 when an Antwerp club, Beerschot AC , had to be dissolved. The club colors purple and white were adopted as well as the players and the fan base. The club, henceforth known as KFCO Beerschot Wilrijk , has been playing its home games in the Olympic Stadium in Antwerp since the merger, since the merger has occasionally been promoted from season to season and peaked figures of over 10,000 spectators in some cases.

In 2019 the name was changed to K Beerschot VA .

Sporting development

The club's greatest success so far after the reform of the league pyramid after the 2015/16 season is promotion to the second-class Division 1B for the 2017/18 season. After a defeat in the promotion play-offs of this season against Cercle Bruges , the KFCO took participated in the play-off 2 of the first division , could not qualify there as the bottom of the group for the European Cup.

In the 2018/19 season Beerschot led the table of the second tranche and thus played again in the promotion finals - this year against the winner of the first tranche KV Mechelen . After a goalless draw in the first game, the second leg was lost 2-1. Beerschot remained in Division 1B. Again, the club was only bottom of the group in the play-off 2 of Division 1A.

On June 1, 2019, the complaints committee of the Belgian Football Union decided to deny Mechelen promotion to the first division in the first division because of the manipulation of the game KV Mechelen against Waasland-Beveren on March 11, 2018 in the 2017/18 season . Instead, Beerschot should rise.

In response to Mechelen’s objection, the Belgian arbitration tribunal for sport ruled on July 10, 2019 that the withdrawal of promotion is not one of the possible sanctions. That left Mechelen with the rise, and Beerschot stayed in Division 1B.

Trainer

For the 2016/17 season, Marc Brys was signed as the new coach with a contract term of two years . After a successful promotion to Division 1B, the contract was prematurely extended for another year. After the renewed promotion did not succeed, Brys left the club for a fee and became a coach at VV St. Truiden .

Stijn Vreven was signed as the new coach . On October 9, 2019, the board decided to part with him. At that time, the club was in fifth place after nine games and was eight points behind from first place with five games to play in the first tranche. The previous assistant coach Hernan Losada became the new head coach.
