Stijn Vreven (born July 18, 1973 in Hasselt , Belgium ) is a former Belgian football player and current coach .

Career

Vreven's professional career began at KV Mechelen , where he made his professional debut in 1993 at the age of 20. After four seasons he moved to KAA Gent . He played in Ghent until 1999 and then moved to the Dutch club FC Utrecht . Here he had his most successful time, so that in 2003 he signed a contract with 1. FC Kaiserslautern . In the Palatinate, however, he could not prevail and played only eight Bundesliga games in the 2003/04 season . After the end of the season he went back to the Netherlands to join Vitesse Arnhem . Here he was able to fight for a regular place again.

Since his departure from Vitesse in 2005, he played at several clubs for a maximum of one year each. Most recently he had a contract with KESK Leopoldsburg.

In 2002, Vreven played two international matches for Belgium .

From 2012 to 2013 Vreven worked as a coach at KFC Dessel Sport , since 2013 at Lommel United . In the 2014/15 season Lommel was first in the third installment of the second division, but then finished last in the promotion round. Vreven moved to the first division Waasland-Beveren .

In his second season there, the club had only one point ahead of the relegation zone after 14 match days. Vreden was fired from the club at the end of October 2016.

On January 1, 2017, he moved to the Dutch club NAC Breda , which at the time played in the Eredivisie , the highest Dutch league, with a contract until the end of the season with the option of an extension of one year. Although he finished 14th with Breda and the club remained in the Eredivisie, the club did not want to extend the contract. Vreden moved back to Belgium with a two-year contract to KFCO Beerschot Wilrijk in Division 1B .

With him, Beerschot took first place in the second tranche in the 2018/19 season , but then lost the promotion games, so that the club remained in Division 1B. In the next season, on matchday 9, the club was eight points behind first place in the first installment with five games still outstanding. Vreden was released on October 9, 2019. On November 19, 2019, Vreven found a new coaching position at Sporting Lokeren . There he signed a contract for the rest of the season with an extension option. As a result of the failure to pay his salary, Vreven (as well as the players) retired after the main round of the 2019/20 season. His contract was finally terminated by the opening of bankruptcy on April 20, 2020.
