Koninklijke Sporting Club Lokeren Oost-Vlaanderen , commonly known in German-speaking countries as Sporting Lokeren , was a Belgian professional football club from Lokeren in the province of East Flanders , which played in the second highest Belgian league, Division 1B , in its last season (2019/20) .

history

By merging the two clubs Racing Lokeren and Standard Lokeren, the Sporting Lokeren club was created in 1970. They managed to move up from the fourth division to the first division within four years . This one belonged without interruptions from the season 1974/75 to the season 1992/93.

The most successful sporting period was the 1980/81 season, in which the club became Belgian runners-up and vice-cup winners. Likewise, the fourth round of the UEFA Cup was reached this season with victories over Dynamo Moscow , Dundee United and Real Sociedad San Sebastián , in which they failed, however, at AZ Alkmaar .

After relegation in 1993, three years followed in the second division, which were also characterized by financial problems, until the recovery was achieved in the 1995/96 season.

Since then, Sporting has played in the upper midfield of the First Division and managed several times to qualify for the UI Cup and in the 2003/04 season for the UEFA Cup.

In 2000, following the merger with Sportkring St.-Niklaas, the company was renamed Sporting Lokeren SNW.

In 2003 the club was finally renamed Sporting Lokeren Oost-Vlaanderen.

The home games are played in the Daknam Stadium.

In the 2018/2019 season, Lokeren was already relegated from Division 1A after the penultimate matchday - even a coach change in January 2019 could not prevent this. The contract of the current coach Glen De Boeck was initially limited to the end of the season. In June 2019, the then chairman Roger Lambrecht sold his shares in the club to Louis De Vries, who also took over the chairmanship, for reasons of age. Under his chairmanship, the contract with de Boeck as a coach was extended.

After the club was in 7th place in the table halfway through the season, which would mean participating in the relegation games at the end of the season, the coaching contract with de Boeck and his assistants was terminated on November 17, 2019. On November 19, 2019, Stijn Vreven was signed as the new coach for the rest of the season with an extension option.

insolvency

At the end of the season Lokeren finished last in the overall table with six points behind and should have played the relegation games with three points penalty against KSV Roeselare . Due to outstanding salary payments, the players stopped training after the main round was over and were only willing to resume training for the relegation games if they got their money. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , these games have been postponed indefinitely. On March 11, 2020, the club still managed to pay the club dues to be paid to the Royal Belgian Football Association . However, the competent commercial court of Dendermonde used administrateurs provisoires ( German  preliminary insolvency administrators ) on March 13, 2020 due to other outstanding claims amounting to four to five million euros and reserved the opening of the proceedings for March 23, 2020. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, this date has been postponed to April 20, 2020.

After all attempts to raise new money were unsuccessful, the commercial court declared the association insolvent on April 20, 2020. President De Vries said he would not object to this.

After talks about a merger with VV Hamme failed, KSV Temse merged with Lokeren on April 22, 2020 . In the new 2020/21 season, the new club will play under the name KSC Lokeren-Temse in the previous Lokeren stadium in the 2nd division of amateurs, the fourth-highest division.
