René Verheyen (born March 21, 1952 in Beerse ) is a former Belgian football player .
Player career
Verheyen probably began his time in men's football at KFC Turnhout , where he appeared from 1971 to 1974 before moving to SC Lokeren . In the eight years in Lokeren he could not win a title. In 1982 he moved to Club Bruges . At Den De Boeren, he won the Belgian Cup in 1986 and the Belgian Supercup in the same year. After the successful years on the Atlantic , he moved to KAA Gent for a year . After another year with the Gentern, he let his career end with the lower-class club White Star Lauwe Menen. In 1989 he ended his career.
International playing career
Verheyen took part in the 1980 European Football Championship in Italy and was runner-up with the team. At the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 , he advanced with the Belgians to the second group stage, but was eliminated there as the bottom of the group. Two years later, at the European Football Championship in France in 1984 , they couldn't get beyond a third group place in the preliminary round.
Career as a coach
Three years after his active career ended, Verheyen became assistant coach at Club Bruges in 1992 . After seven years as an assistant coach, he was allowed to try his hand at head coach in the 1999/2000 season. In 2000 he became an assistant coach again and held the office until 2006. During his time in the coaching staff of Bruges, he won the Belgian championship four times, the Belgian Cup five times and the Belgian Supercup seven times.
