Karol Dobiaš (born December 18, 1947 in Handlová ) is a former Slovak football player and football coach .

Player career

Karol Dobiaš played for Baník Handlová in his youth. In 1965 he moved to Spartak Trnava , with whom he was five times Czechoslovakian champion and three times Czechoslovak cup winner. The defender was voted Czechoslovak Footballer of the Year in 1970 and 1971. In 1977 he moved to Bohemians Prague . In the Czechoslovak League Dobiaš completed 344 games in which he scored 20 goals. In 1980 he was allowed to move abroad and went to the Belgian club KSC Lokeren . His career ended in 1984 with FC Heirnis Gent .

National team

Karol Dobiaš made his debut in the Czechoslovak national team on May 3, 1967. He was a participant in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, in 1976 he was European champion. In the Belgrade final against the Federal Republic of Germany, he scored the interim 2-0. Overall, Dobiaš played 67 times in the dress of Czechoslovakia, the last time on March 26, 1980, he scored a total of five goals. Five times he led the team as captain on the field.

Coaching career

Karol Dobiaš began his coaching career in 1984 as a junior coach at Bohemians Prague. In 1988/89 he coached the SK Hradec Králové , but was dismissed after the 14th match day. In September 1990 he took over FC Zbrojovka Brno (later BOBY Brno). The team was relegated and managed to get promoted again immediately with Dobiaš. After the 23rd day of the 1992/93 season he was released. In 1993/94 he was a coach at Sparta Prague , with whom he became Czech champion. After only two games in 1994/95 he was also released here.

1995/96 Dobiaš briefly coached the smaller Prague club SK Sparta Krč . He then worked for a long time as a scout for Sparta Prague. In 2003/04 he became assistant coach at Bohemians Prague, but in January 2004 the club ended the collaboration.

Karol Dobiaš lives in the Czech Republic and has not only Slovak but also Czech citizenship . In his playing days, he stood out for his long hair and fashionable extravagance and was considered a teen idol. He is said to have said about Pavel Nedvěd in 1993: "He will never work out, he can be happy when he sits on the bench at Sparta Prague".
