Ján Pivarník (born November 13, 1947 in Cejkov ) is a former Slovak football player and current football coach .

Player career

Ján Pivarník was 16 years old when he started playing football for the club. He left the club of his birthplace Cejkov after a short time and played for Slavoj Trebišov from then on. The full-back played for the juniors in the first year, but from 1965/66 he played for the first team in the Czechoslovak second division. There he stood out for his good performance so that he was nominated for the U18 national team, which played a UEFA tournament in Yugoslavia . There, too, Pivarník played superbly and it was clear that Slavoj Trebišov would not be able to keep him. Spartak Trnava was interested in the right-back , but offered neither a transfer fee nor a bonus. The VSS Košice paid both and also have made sure that Pivarník got an education. The right-back soon made a name for himself in Košice , mainly because of his speed. On April 27, 1968 Ján Pivarník made his debut in the 3-2 win against Brazil in Bratislava in the Czechoslovak national team . He was in the 1970 World Cup , but did not play a game in Mexico .

In 1971 it looked like Pivarník would move to Sparta Prague , but the transfer failed when his teammate Jaroslav Pollák wanted to change, which the officials did not like, who then blocked the transfers. However, the blonde defender no longer signed a new contract with VSS Košice and left the club in 1972 for Slovan Bratislava . There he celebrated his greatest successes at club level with the 1974 Cup and the 1974 and 1975 championships. In 1974 he was named Czechoslovak Footballer of the Year.

With the Czechoslovak national team, Ján Pivarník was European champion in Yugoslavia in 1976 , but he was already plagued by injury problems after a meniscus operation . The end of his career was already in sight at the age of 30. In the 1978/79 season he tried it at Dukla Banská Bystrica , but did not play a single league game there. He then made one last attempt at Slovan Bratislava, but gave up after only two training sessions. In his career, Ján Pivarník played 267 games in the 1st Czechoslovak League, in which he scored 13 goals.

From 1979 to 1981 Pivarník worked as a player- coach for the Austrian clubs ASV Kittsee and SC Neusiedl am See . In the summer of 1981 he tried a comeback at the Spanish first division club FC Cádiz , to which Dušan Galis had also switched. In defensive midfield, Pivarník played eight games, but when Cádiz FC failed to stick to their contractual agreements, agency Pragosport brought both Galis and Pivarník back.
