Despotovac ( Serbian - Cyrillic Деспотовац ) is a town and municipality in central Serbia . The city belongs to the administrative district of Pomoravlje and is located on the Resava River in the Gornja Resava ("Upper Resava") region, of which it is the historical center.
Despotovac itself has about 4,300 inhabitants, the municipality about 25,600. Almost all residents are Serbs (96%).
history
The small town was named after the despot Stefan Lazarević , who is buried in the nearby monastery. Next to the name, a monument commemorates the medieval ruler.
economy
There is a large quarry in the immediate vicinity of the city.
Attractions
In the city center is the newly built Orthodox Church, dedicated to the despot Stefan and his mother, Princess Milica . In the vicinity of Despotovac there is also the important fortified monastery Manasija , in whose church Despot Stefan is buried. Another popular destination is the Veliki buk waterfall near the source of the Resava.
