František Veselý (born December 7, 1943 in Prague ; † October 30, 2009 there ) was a Czechoslovak football player . The striker became European champion in 1976 .
Club career
Veselý played in his youth for Slavia Prague , in 1962 he moved to Dukla Prague for two years to do his military service there. In his second year with Dukla, Veselý became Czechoslovakian champion. In the 1964/65 season he helped Slavia rise to the first division. He remained loyal to the red and whites until 1980, the only title win in this period was winning the 1974 Czech Cup, Veselý was team captain .
The right wing striker spent the last years of his career in Austria . In the 1980/81 season he played 20 games for Rapid Vienna , from 1981 to 1983 he played for SC Zwettl , his last station was First Vienna FC in 1983/84 .
In the 1st Czechoslovak League, Veselý played 414 games in which he scored 62 goals. Between 1965 and 1968 he played one hundred games for Slavia Prague in a row. In total, the attacker made 920 games for the "red-whites".
National team
Veselý made his debut in the Czechoslovak national team on September 19, 1965. The ČSSR won 3-1 in Prague against Romania . At the 1970 World Cup he was in the Czechoslovak squad.
Veselý celebrated the greatest success in the national team by winning the European Championship in 1976 . In the semifinals against the Netherlands, which the ČSSR won 3-1 after extra time, Veselý scored his last of three international goals in the 118th minute of the game. In the final against Germany he was substituted on for Karol Dobiaš in the 94th minute , while Veselý did not have to take part in the penalty shoot-out that was victorious for Czechoslovakia . He was supposed to be the sixth shooter of his team, but that didn't happen because Uli Hoeneß missed his penalty .
After this success Veselý played only three international matches, the last on March 23, 1977 in Prague's Letná Stadium against Greece , the Czechoslovaks won 4-0.

Veselý died on October 30, 2009 of heart failure .

František Veselý 's father of the same name (* 1920) already played in the 1st Czechoslovak League. His son, also František (* 1969), was a professional footballer.
