The Sportclub Zwettl is an Austrian sports club from the district capital Zwettl in Lower Austria and runs the football , handball , table tennis , chess , motor sports and winter sports sections . The soccer section plays under the name SC Sparkasse Zwettl in the Landesliga Niederösterreich , the fourth highest division in Austria.

History of the football section

At a founding meeting on October 15, 1945, it was decided to found a Zwettl football section . The first players were registered with the NÖFV on November 10, 1945 . At the same time, the first sports field was built with the support of the community. At a general assembly in 1947, the first statutes were adopted, the club's colors were blue and white and the club was renamed Sportclub Zwettl .

The football department played since the reintroduction of the Regionalliga Ost in 1985 until relegation in 1996 in the Regionalliga. After three years of abstinence, the club rose again to the third level in 1999. After a tough relegation battle in the first year and a subsequent fifth place in the table in the 2000/01 season, the sports club rose again to the national league in the following season. After repeated promotion in the 2004/05 season under the then coach Helmut Lamatsch, relegation could be prevented in the first year. In the following years they always played in the lower half of the table, but the club was able to establish itself again in the Eastern League.

In the 2007/08 season, relegation could only be secured on the last match day. As a consequence, after several years of cooperation, coach Lamatsch was separated and Lucjan Wojtanovicz was hired as the new coach. In addition, with the start of the championship in 2008/09, the move to the new home, the Edelhof sports facility, was completed. After the 2009/10 season, he was relegated to the Lower Austrian Regional League.

Stadion

Since the beginning of the 2008/09 season, SC Zwettl has played its home games on the newly built Edelhof sports complex. The most important components of this new facility include the 105 × 68 meter main pitch, the training pitch and the two-storey cabin and grandstand building, the grandstand of which can accommodate around 600 visitors. The capacity is around 2000 spectators.

In August 2002 the former home of SC Zwettl was completely destroyed by the flood of the century. Gangs and gates were simply washed away and the lawn was like the surface of the moon. The municipality decided to restore the traditional Zwettltal stadium . The club had to play its home games on smaller sports fields in the area. The stadium was not operational again until September 2003. After repeated floods in autumn 2005 and spring 2006, it was decided to say goodbye to the Zwettltal Stadium. The move to the newly built sports facility at Edelhof followed in summer 2008.
