Antonín Panenka (born December 2, 1948 in Prague ) is a former Czechoslovak football player . He became European champion with the Czechoslovak national team in 1976 .

Career

Panenka was considered a tech-savvy midfielder in Czechoslovakia and Austria . He played for Bohemians Prague from 1958 (as a youth player, since 1967 in the first team) to 1981, during which time he received offers from abroad, but was not allowed to change - only those who were 32 years old and at least 45 international appearances for the ČSSR had completed, got the approval of the association. Immediately after his 32nd birthday in 1981, he switched to Rapid Vienna . There he played 172 competitive games until 1985, in which he scored 77 goals. Although he had higher-value offers from Spain, Switzerland and Belgium, he decided on Rapid because he believed that he would be the most likely to assert himself in the Austrian league and because there was a Czech school in Vienna where his children go could. His other positions were VSE St. Pölten from 1985 to 1987 , SK Slovan Vienna from 1987 to 1989 , ASV Hohenau from 1989 to 1991 , Kleinwiesendorf from 1991 to 1993 and finally the ASKÖ Steyrermühl club from Laakirchen . There Panenka played in the 1993/1994 season after his debut in the ÖFB Cup against Union Weißkirchen due to a training injury only two championship games in the Upper Austrian regional league .

Panenka ended his active career at the age of 45. Afterwards he was first assistant coach at his old club Bohemians Prague, later club president. His way of playing earned him a nickname: Because of his large overview, Panenka was also called "The man with the radar eyes". He was still famous for his free kicks, which he circled over the wall into the Kreuzeck.

The Panenka lifter

He achieved fame on the night of Belgrade when he converted the decisive penalty kick in the final of the European Championship 1976 for Czechoslovakia against the team of the Federal Republic of Germany . After Uli Hoeneß had shot his penalty over the goal, Panenka showed strong nerves: Instead of placing and shooting with force into a corner of the goal, he successfully speculated that Germany's goalkeeper Sepp Maier would jump into a corner of the goal and shoveled under his right foot the ball to lift it in a slight arc into the middle of the goal. A penalty shot like this is still known today as a Panenka lifter .

successes

In addition to winning the title at the 1976 European Championship, Panenka also took part in the 1980 European Championship in Italy and the 1982 World Cup in Spain . His successes at club level were the Austrian championship title with Rapid Wien in 1982 and 1983, the ÖFB Cup victories in 1983, 1984 and 1985 and reaching the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup against FC Everton (1: 3 defeat) in 1985.
