The 1986/87 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the 27th draw of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 32 club teams took part, including 27 national cup winners and 5 defeated cup finalists (VfB Stuttgart, Olympiacos, Waterford United, FC Żurrieq and Rapid Wien). Clubs from England were excluded from participation after the Heysel disaster . Defending champion Dynamo Kiev had qualified as the Soviet national champion for the European Cup of National Champions in 1986/87 .
DFB Cup finalist VfB Stuttgart from Germany, FDGB Cup winner 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig from GDR , ÖFB Cup finalist SK Rapid Vienna from Austria and Cup winner FC Sion from Switzerland were at the start.
Favorite Ajax Amsterdam won the final in the Olympic Stadium in Athens 1-0 against 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig. This was the third and, at the same time, the last final appearance of a GDR club team in the European Cup Winners' Cup (and in the European Football Cup in general) after 1974 and 1981 .
The top scorer was the Dutchman John Bosman from title holder Ajax Amsterdam with 8 goals.
mode
As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the number of goals scored away decided ( away goal rule ). If their number was also the same, extra time took place in the second leg, in which the away goals rule also applied. If there was still a tie at the end of extra time, a penalty shoot- out was carried out. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, the winner would also have been determined in a penalty shoot-out.
1 round
The first legs took place on 16./17. September, the second leg from September 30th to October 2nd, 1986.
