Stanley Purl Menzo (born October 15, 1963 in Paramaribo ) is a former Dutch soccer goalkeeper and current coach with Surinamese roots.

Player career

society

Menzo began his career in 1984 at Ajax Amsterdam . At the end of his first year as a professional, Ajax became Dutch champions. For the 1985/86 season he replaced Hans Galjé as number 1 in the Amsterdam goal. As a regular goalkeeper, Menzo and the team won the KNVB Cup . This title was defended the following year. In 1990 the goalkeeper won his second championship with the traditional Dutch team. After a bad start in the 1992/93 season, with uncertainties and mistakes, Menzo slipped into the second rank and was pushed onto the bench by Edwin van der Sar . He then moved to PSV Eindhoven in 1994 . Before that the cup could be won again. In Eindhoven he did not manage to assert himself, but celebrated his fourth national cup triumph. In the summer of 1996 Menzo moved to the Belgian club Lierse SK . He built on better times and helped the club to its first championship since 1960. Shortly afterwards, the Belgian Supercup was won. Nevertheless, the goalkeeper was loaned to France, Girondins Bordeaux , where he was supposed to replace Gilbert Bodart . However, Menzo did not manage to convince, was then ousted by Ulrich Ramé and then returned to Belgium in January 1998. He played in Lier for two more years before Ajax Amsterdam signed him again. There he was to succeed his successor and replace van der Sar, who moved to Turin. Menzo did not manage to do this and therefore did not return to the league for Ajax. After only one year with his home club, the goalkeeper went to the amateur league, to AGOVV Apeldoorn , where he won the amateur cup title in 2001/02. He then ended his active career.

National team

With the Oranje Elftal he took part in the 1990 World Cup and the 1992 European Championships , but was not used because the regular goalkeeper Hans van Breukelen was free of mistakes and injuries.
