from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans-Ulrich Pönack (born May 30, 1946 in Berlin ) is a German film critic . He works primarily for Deutschlandradio Kultur and 105'5 Spreeradio . He also operates a YouTube channel.

Career

Pönack is a graduate in administration and has been a civil servant at the Federal Insurance Agency for Salaried Employees for a total of 23 years since joining as an apprentice in 1962 . On the side, however, he began to work as a film critic, for example for the Spandauer Volksblatt . For Verrisse he used the pseudonym 'Christian Dilzburger'. Since there was no money from the lenders for reviews, but free tickets, he published bad reviews under the pseudonym so that they had no influence on the awarding of the free tickets.

The starting point for Pönack's enthusiasm for films were the 1950s and 1960s in West Berlin : As the son of an usher, he was able to spend a lot of time in the cinema. Since 1969 he has been reporting for RIAS Berlin and its successor Deutschlandradio Kultur . Alternating with three other radio critics he discusses there mainly in the evening broadcast Conclusion cinema film starts of the week. In addition, from 1999 to 2015 he was a permanent employee of the SAT.1 breakfast television , where he regularly provided information about new movies every Wednesday. Every Friday he also reported there regularly on cinematic news on the DVD market.

Furthermore, Pönack performed weekly on the private radio broadcaster Radio Gong 96.3 in Munich (from 2002 to 2015). At 105'5 Spreeradio in Berlin he is also (since 2004) an “expert” as a cinema and DVD critic. He has been featured as a film expert on his YouTube channel pöni-tv since 2015 . Since October 11, 2018, he and Caroline Steinkrug have been leading the film podcast Pönis Kinowoche , which goes online every Wednesday and talks about current films, home theater releases, occasionally football and private matters.

HUP, as it is called, has also worked for print media for a long time; for example for the monthly culture brochure Pro + Kontra of the DGB (from 1967 to 1974) or for the Berlin city magazine tip (from 1974 to 1997). At the radio station RIAS 2 he moderated / commented on Tuesday evening from October 1985 to May 1992 on the two-hour, later one-hour program RIAS 2 Special: Film aktuell .

Current films are critically reviewed and DVD recommendations are published on its website every week. There is also his extensive archive of criticism, which is constantly being updated. In addition, the archive is constantly being expanded with Pönack interviews and themed articles. As a guest critic on his website, his podcast partner Caroline Steinkrug occasionally represents him.

Personal

Pönack is single, is involved in animal welfare and lives in Berlin . At the end of March 2020 he suffered a "very serious" head injury in a domestic accident, but has been "back" since May 2020.

style

Pönack's activity is not directed towards specific film genres. He is interested in everything “to destroy or praise”. In his judgment, he is always clear and does not shy away from describing, in his opinion, unsuccessful films as “moderate to gross”. From Sat.1 breakfast television he was therefore called "Terminator film criticism" and "Bud Spencer of Haudraufkritiker".

Pönack insists on his independence from the media business: “My judgment is incorruptible. I don't go to any movie round tables and I don't belong to any association. I generally don't go to premiere parties. I can also eat sandwiches at home. "
