Johannes Nicolaas "John" van 't Schip (born December 30, 1963 in Fort St. John , British Columbia , Canada ) is a former Dutch football player and current coach .

Player career

John van 't Schip learned to play football at the youth academy of Ajax Amsterdam . In 1981 he moved to the professional squad of the traditional Dutch club. He made his debut in the Eredivisie in December of the same year . The winger soon prevailed and a good career with many titles followed. In 1982, 1983, 1985 and 1990 the Dutch championship was won, in 1983, 1986 and 1987 the KNVB Cup . The greatest successes during this period include winning the 1987 European Cup Winners 'Cup and the 1992 UEFA Cup . In the summer of 1992, van' t Schip moved abroad and signed with CFC Genoa . He stayed there for four seasons before ending his career. During his entire career, van 't Schip scored 40 goals in 380 league appearances.

National team

John van 't Schip made his debut with the Dutch national football team in April 1986 against Scotland . Two years later he was appointed to the squad for the 1988 European Championship in Germany by the then coach Rinus Michels . Van 't Schip was only used once during the tournament. In the preliminary group game of Group 2, he was in the starting line-up for the Dutch. However, the game was lost 1-0 to the USSR. It was the only defeat in the competition. The Dutch reached the final and prevailed there, again against the USSR, 2-0. For the 1990 World Cup , the offensive player was back in the national team. Here he was used twice. At his last major tournament, the 1992 Euro in Sweden, there was again only enough space on the bench. Van 't Schip came on two short appearances against the CIS and the eventual European champions Denmark . In June 1995, when he met Belarus , he wore the Oranje jersey for the last time .

Coaching career

After his active professional career, van 't Schip moved back to Ajax Amsterdam. Between 1997 and 2000 he coached the youth teams there, before the new coach Co Adriaanse was appointed to the Eredivisie team in 2000 . After a year as assistant coach, he was attracted by league rivals FC Twente Enschede . Van 't Schip only lasted one season with the red and whites before he was replaced by René Vandereycken . From 2002 to 2004, the former offensive player looked after the reserve team at Ajax. From 2004 to 2008 he was Marco van Bsten's assistant coach for the Dutch national football team . He then worked further and van Basten at Ajax Amsterdam . After the contract between this and Ajax was dissolved, van 't Schip was used as an interim coach until the end of the 2008/09 season . The following season he was replaced by Martin Jol . Together with Danny Blind he stayed as assistant coach to Jols. In autumn 2009 van 't Schip was introduced as the coach of the newly founded Australian soccer team Melbourne Heart , which started playing in the A-League in the 2010/11 season . Van 't Schip announced at the beginning of 2012 that he would leave the club after two years for “personal and professional reasons” and return to the Netherlands with his family. In July 2012 he signed a contract with the Mexican club Deportivo Guadalajara .

Van 't Schip returned to Melbourne Heart as a coach on December 30, 2013. At the end of January 2014, the team was renamed Melbourne City.

At the end of July 2019, he became the coach of the Greek national football team .
