history

PEC Zwolle

In 1928 PEC reached the final of the KNVB Cup and has been playing football professionally since 1955. Along with the Zwolsche Atletische Club (ZAC) and the Zwolsche Boys, PEC was one of three top clubs in Zwolle. While the ZAC was assigned to the upper class and the Zwolsche Boys to the working class, the PEC was associated with the middle class. This resulted in fierce rivalries, especially between PEC and the Zwolsche Boys, who played in the same league and whose stadium was not far away, and played in the same stadium for a few years. Nevertheless, both clubs merged in 1969 under the name PEC Zwolle.

In 1977 the club reached the cup final, but lost to Twente Enschede in extra time and missed promotion to the Eredivisie by just one point in the same season. In the following year, the promotion succeeded for the first time and the team immediately achieved an eighth place, which should remain the best placement of the club to this day. The success of this time was due to the fact that experienced players like Rinus Israël could be signed by other clubs. The financial means came from a. from Slavenburgse Bank , whose director Jan Willem van der Wal was President of the PEC. By 1982 the club had accumulated a mountain of debt of six million guilders and was on the verge of financial ruin. This could only be averted by restructuring the new President Marten Eibrink. New, famous players arrived: Piet Schrijvers , Johnny Rep and Cees van Kooten . The club survived - but only briefly: In 1985 PEC Zwolle was relegated. In the following season, however, the team rose again under coach Co Adriaanse and with the player Foeke Booy . When the club was relegated again in 1989, the financial situation worsened to such an extent that the professional club actually went bankrupt in 1990.

FC Zwolle

After the bankruptcy, the club was re-established as FC Zwolle. Gradually, success returned and in 1992/1993 a young team with attractive football just barely missed promotion to the Eredivisie. The greatest talents later became top stars of major international clubs: Jaap Stam (later PSV Eindhoven , Manchester United , Lazio Rome and AC Milan ), Bert Konterman ( Feyenoord and Glasgow Rangers ), Johan Hansma ( SC Heerenveen ), Henri van der Vegt ( Udinese Calcio ) and Henk Timmer ( AZ Alkmaar , Ajax Amsterdam , Feyenoord Rotterdam ). The rise finally succeeded in 2002, but two years later Zwolle descended again. After a very good second half of the season, the FCZ was only passed on to the relegation zone on the last match day.

In the Eerste Divisie, FC Zwolle was the favorite in 2004/05, but local rivals Heracles Almelo and Sparta Rotterdam secured promotion .

At the beginning of the 2008/09 season, the new FC Zwolle stadium with 10,500 seats was inaugurated. Today the venue is called Mac3Park Stadium . In the 2010/11 season, FC Zwolle reached second place, but could not prevail in the relegation. The promotion finally succeeded in the following season with a sovereign 1st place. Thus, the club will play in the Eredivisie again from the 2012/13 season .

PEC Zwolle

On April 14, 2012, during the championship celebration, it was announced that FC will be renaming itself again to PEC Zwolle in order to build on the old times and the legend of the 1980s of PEC. The jerseys and the club crest were only marginally changed, the lettering in the crest was replaced by PEC Zwolle .

On April 20, 2014, the PEC Zwolle celebrated the greatest success in the club's history when they won the Dutch Football Cup with a 5-1 win over Ajax Amsterdam . In the following season, the PEC was qualified for the playoffs for the UEFA Europa League , but failed there at Sparta Prague .

At the beginning of the 2014/2015 season, PEC Zwolle won the Johan Cruijff schaal (champions against cup winners) against Ajax Amsterdam with a 0-1 win at the Ajax Stadium
