Dean Anthony Bouzanis (born October 2, 1990 in Sydney ) is an Australian - Greek football goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Australian club Melbourne City FC since January 2016 .

Career

society

Dean Bouzanis was born in Sydney to two Greek parents and attended De La Salle College in Cronulla , New South Wales . He started playing soccer at the small local club Carss Park FC , where he played with Nikolas Tsattalios , who would later become a teammate at Sydney FC . He finally landed at the New South Wales Institute of Sport in 2006 via the St. George Saints and Sydney Olympic .

In January 2007 Bouzanis completed a three-week period with the English top club Liverpool , where he was offered a three-year contract after the three weeks. Liverpool coach Rafael Benítez called him "the world's best goalkeeper in his age group". As part of the AFC Champions League 2007 he was awarded as support for the aging goalkeeper Clint Bolton to the Australian club Sydney FC , but did not come to any time. Actually, the loan period should be extended to January 2008, but Sydney no longer led him in the professional squad. Then Bouzanis played for Liverpool's U-18s and for the reserve team and after a loan deal at fifth division Wrexham FC failed in July 2009, he was loaned to Accrington Stanley in November until the end of the season. There he made his debut for Accrington on November 28 in a 2-2 draw in the FA Cup against Barnet FC , before he also played his first league game a few days later in a 2-0 away win at Burton Albion . By the end of the season, Bouzanis was able to book 14 league appearances for himself. In May 2011, his contract, which was still running for one year, was terminated by mutual agreement.

In July 2011 the rumor arose that Bouzanis had agreed on an employment contract with the Australian first division side Melbourne Victory , but the club denied this. Instead, he acted as a backup for injured goalkeeper Paul Gerrard at Oldham Athletic from November 26, but was initially only signed for a month. During this time Oldham had to play in the FA Cup against Bouzani's old club Liverpool , he himself experienced the 1: 5 defeat only from the bench. In February 2012 he finally got a contract until the end of the 2011/12 season. On March 27, 2012 he made his debut for the "Latics" when he came on the field in the league game against Leyton Orient in the second half. When Bouzanis contract expired at the end of the season, goalkeeper Alex Cisak suddenly injured himself , so that Bouzanis signed a new one-year contract. But in preparation for the 2012/13 season, he injured his ankle and was out for a few weeks. Due to the injury, he also lost his regular place, only in September 2012 he was back in the gate of the "Latics". On January 27, 2013, Oldham met Bouzani's old club, Liverpool FC, in the fourth round of the FA Cup. In Boundary Park they had a surprising 3-2 success and thus they unexpectedly moved into the next round, where Everton FC was waiting. There, Bouzanis came under criticism because he had rushed to the corner when the score was 1: 2 in stoppage time and allegedly prepared the 2-2 equalizer by Matt Smith by hand . After several slow-motions, however, it could be seen that this was not the case. At the end of the 2012/13 season, his contract was not renewed, although he was the first goalkeeper between the posts for most of the season.

Therefore, he was drawn to the Greek first division club Aris Thessaloniki in the 2013/14 season , where he was initially signed for a year. On September 23, 2013 he made his Super League debut in the 2-0 defeat at Skoda Xanthi .

After Bouzanis only played one game in the first half of the season, he was sacked in December 2013 and moved to Carlisle United on January 28, 2014 , where he initially signed a contract until April 2014. Without playing a league game, he signed with the Western Sydney Wanderers after the contract expired in May 2014 . Although he was not used regularly for the Wanderers, he won the 2014 AFC Champions League with the team in the final against the Saudi Arabian representative al-Hilal (1-0, 0-0).

In January 2016 moved to Melbourne City FC , as a replacement for Tando Velaphi who had moved to China . On February 26, he made his debut in the 2-1 defeat at Wellington Phoenix . In April Bouzanis signed a contract extension until the end of the 2016/17 season. On October 8, he came into play in the derby against Melbourne Victory in the second half, as regular goalkeeper Thomas Sørensen was thrown off the field with a red card. In November they won the FFA Cup 2016 , in the final Sydney FC were beaten 1-0 by a goal from Tim Cahill . On February 8, 2017 Bouzanis was again suspended for five games after he racially insulted Melbourne Victory's Albanian striker Besart Berisha as "Gypsy" (German: Gypsy) .

He moved back to Europe for the 2018/19 season. The Dutch team PEC Zwolle took Bouzanis on loan, with an option to buy at the end of the loan deal. However, Bouzanis returned to Melbourne without league use at the end of the season. He has been named regular goalkeeper for the 2019/20 season.

National team

In 2005, at the age of 15, he was nominated for the Australian U-17 national team . A year later he was part of the squad that missed qualifying for the U-17 Asian Cup.

On February 2, 2008 Bouzanis was invited by the Greek U-19 national team coach Alexandros Alexiou to play a friendly against Slovakia three days later. He then traveled to Greece and gave an interview on the Greek radio station "Sport FM". For the U-19 national team of Greece, he completed two internationals against Slovakia, but both were lost. Even if Bouzanis was now also for a Greek national youth team, he would still have been eligible to play for Australia's senior team. Australian media warned not to make the same mistake as Joey Didulica , who ultimately preferred the Croatian national soccer team .

In April 2008 Bouzanis was invited for the Intercontinental Cup in Malaysia, which served the Australian U-23 national team in preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . Regular goalkeeper Danny Vukovic had been suspended by the Australian Football Association due to a physical attack on a referee. Although Vukovic's ban was not lifted until the Olympic tournament, Bouzanis did not get a nomination for this tournament. He then received an invitation from the Greek U-19s to take part in the finals of the U-19 European Football Championship in 2008 , which Bouzanis was proud of, but this was not a favor in Australia. However, his agent insisted that Bouzanis still wanted to leave the opportunity open to play for the Australian national team. It wasn't until April that he met national coach Pim Verbeek in Liverpool for a conversation.

In February 2009 Bouzanis decided to play for Australia again. He was appointed to the 21-man squad for the U-20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009 and played the first two group matches against Costa Rica and the Czech Republic, both of which were lost. On June 1, 2011, he completed a U-23 international match against Japan, in which he was substituted on for Andrew Redmayne in the second half . Furthermore, Bouzanis was nominated in the same month for the qualifying game of the Australian U-23 national team for participation in the Olympic football tournament 2012 in London against Yemen .
