Tando Yuji Velaphi (born April 17, 1987 in Perth ) is an Australian football player . The goalkeeper has played in the A-League for Perth Glory since 2007 .

Career

Velaphi, who has Zimbabwean and Japanese ancestry, grew up in Perth and trained at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra towards the end of his youth . The goalkeeper began his active career at Perth SC in the Football West State League , the highest league in the state of Western Australia . In early 2007 he played briefly on loan at the professional club Queensland Roar and came to a league assignment there. In the summer of 2007, Velaphi was signed by Perth Glory .

After Perth signed Danny Vukovic for the 2011/12 season , Velaphi decided to change clubs and joined Melbourne Victory . There he made four appearances in the AFC Champions League 2011 during the season break , but suffered a fatigue fracture in his shin in preparation for the 2011/12 season and was out for most of the season. Melbourne, meanwhile, signed Ante Covic to replace him. Velaphi was only used on the last two game days of the season, when the play-offs were no longer available. Under the new coach Ange Postecoglou , Velaphi's rival Lawrence Thomas was initially given preference, after he had failed several times in a 5-0 defeat, Velaphi came on the 3rd match day against Adelaide United to train. Only a short time later, however, the club signed another goalkeeper, Nathan Coe , who immediately became the goalkeeper.

With the U-20 national team of Australia , the goalkeeper took part in the 2006 AFC Junior Championship in India and replaced Mitchell Langerak in goal from the second game . The team ultimately failed in the quarter-finals against South Korea and thus missed qualification for the World Cup finals. In qualifying for the 2008 Olympic tournament in China, Velaphi was a substitute goalkeeper behind Danny Vukovic for 13 of the 14 qualifying games in the Australian Olympic team (U-23) , the so-called Olyroos . When he was nominated for the Olympic football tournament in 2008 , he benefited from a suspension from Vukovic, who had been suspended for several months after being assaulted by a referee and Velaphi took over for him. During the tournament he remained behind Adam Federici substitute goalkeeper and was not used in the preliminary rounds.
